Hereford Youth Honored with Prospect Awards
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Three youth were chosen for their involvement in the Hereford industry on the local and national level at the at the 2013VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Kansas City, Mo., July 19.
Each year the National Hereford Women and the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) sponsor the Prospect Awards for kids third through fifth grade. Winners are selected from each grade represented based on a written application.
The Junior Prospect Award winners are: third grade – Sheridan Chaney, Elwood, Neb.; fourth grade – Lauren Jones, Darlington, Wis.; fifth grade – Wesley Denton, Blue Rapids, Kan.
Sheridan Chaney, 9, is in her second year as a member of the NJHA and Nebraska Junior Hereford Association. Last year’s junior national in Grand Island, Neb., was her first, but she participated in showmanship, judging and speech contests.
Lauren Jones, 10, has been a member of the NJHA and the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association for three years. She competed in both the 2011 and 2012 JNHE, but has been showing since she was three years old. This is her second year to participate in the Junior AI program.
Wesley Denton, 11, has been a member of the NJHA since he was born, but has been an active member of NJHA and the Kansas Junior Polled Hereford Association since 2009. He was named reserve champion peewee showman in 2011. He won the third grade prospect award in 2011 and the fourth grade prospect award last year. He was also a member of the champion junior team marketing team this year.
The 2013 VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo was sponsored in part by Biozyme Inc., St. Joseph, Mo. The NJHA is one of the most active junior programs in the country with approximately 3,000 members.
