Internet Course Development Workshop Application (Design Phase)
Design Phase Only (for facilitator training only for courses that already exist in hybrid or online format

The Center for Teaching and Learning is committed to continuous improvement in how we conduct our processes and how we serve our faculty and staff.

To assist you in mastering the prerequisite learning technology skills necessary for successfully teaching an existing online or hybrid course, please enroll in the Blackboard Essentials workshop before you begin the Internet Course Development Workshop (ICDW). Check the workshop schedule on MVConnect for the most current offerings.

Here’s what you need to do to apply for the ICDW:

  1. Contact the Dean andDepartment Chair who presides over the course you would like to teach. This initial contact is to express intent and obtain approval to:
  2. serve as an online or hybrid course instructor for a course that is already being taught in either of those formats in your department,
  3. Please let your Dean and Department Chair know that you have mastered the technology skills necessary to participate in this course (Blackboard Essentials is necessary).
  1. Review this ICDW application packet. After the Dean has approved, and the Department Chair is aware of your intent to teach, the next step is to learn about your rights and responsibilities. The packet contains the following information:
  2. An explanation of the application process,
  3. Intent to Develop Internet Course Section Proposal,
  4. Internet Course Development Agreement,
  5. Blackboard Essentials workshop information,
  6. ICDW Course Schedule.

Please review the packet thoroughly to ensure you understand what to expect and what will be expected of you.

  1. Included in the packet is an article that we believe will give you an understanding of the commitment needed to teach in the online environment. We want you to understand the nature of online teaching well before you commit. Contact Annette Gonzales f you wish to discuss more details or ask questions before making a decision.
  2. Complete the Intent to Develop Internet Course Section Proposal form. You’ve already provided your Dean and Department Chair with verbal expression of your intent to teach a course that is already available in eitheronline or hybrid format. Complete the Intent to Develop form to provide written expression of your intent. Submitting this form allows you to:
  3. Notify your department chair that you are serious about teaching the course. He/she will put the course on a future schedule.
  4. Formally declare mastery of the necessary technology skills for effective online and/or hybrid teaching and request your Dean’s approval to teach theonline or hybrid course.
  5. Formally declare your intent to enroll in the Internet Course Development Workshop. The CTL will begin contacting you and setting up materials for your participation in the course.
  6. Notify the Faculty Association President (full-time faculty only) that you will be undertaking the Internet Course Development process. Be sure to obtain all the signatures and return the form to the CTL.
  1. After the CTL has received your signed form, one of the Non-traditional Learning (NTL) team members will contact you via email and advise you to attend the ICDW kick-off meeting. The ICDW Kick-Off meeting is the first meeting of the workshop during which time you will learn more about the nature of the workshop and get a chance to ask questions. You will also be asked to read, sign, and submit the Internet Course Development Agreement and work with a facilitator. If you have questions about this part of the process, please feel free to contact the CTL.
  2. There is a $250 stipend for fully completing this course. Your department chair or dean will approve payment after you have presented your work to them. They will then email the CTL informing them to release your payment.

How does this affect ECH?

For both full-time and adjunct faculty, the amount of the stipend is converted into an ECH value, and would count against the total ECH allowed. The calculation is amount of stipend divided by faculty member’s rate.

In summary, we sincerely hope that this thorough explanation has helped to inform you about the process. I also hope that you choose to take the challenge of becoming an onlineor hybrid instructor here at Moraine Valley. The NTL team has worked to make the experience worthwhile for you and to help you develop a solid foundation upon which build your technology integration and online teaching skills. We hope you will visit us often in the CTL (L244).
