I'm the transcendental number Pi (point two fingers of one hand downwards and place the other forefinger across knuckles to make the Greek letter )

The Why of Pi

Here is a little song about the history of pi

Circumference of a circle by diameter divide,

Three-point-one-four is just the start, the end has no location

It’s a transcendental, infinite, irrational mentation.

Four thousand (roughly)years ago in sandy Egypt land,

The measurement of circles was so hard to understand,

A mathematician named Ahmes became a famous guy

Without the use of decimals he estimated pi.

The Greeks were sure that circles could be squared and vice-versa

And they subdivided hexagons, which only made it worse-a

The Chinese got the farthest- over 20,000 sides

With decimals and zeros they approximated pi.

Now a lot of other people since have given pi a try

And they’ve tried to make it rational while others wonder WHY?

Who cares if it’s three-point-one-four or 50 billion places?

Let’s celebrate this special day with pie upon our faces!

Handy Dandy Pi

(to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy)

Each circle has a radius

Diameter's its double

But try to find circumf’rence without pi and you’re in trouble!
