About Here & Now

Miami Light Project launched Here & Now in 1998 as a commissioning and presenting program that to supports the professional development of Miami-based artists. By commissioning, presenting and helping to tour new work by Miami-based artists, we are building an indigenous artistic spirit that is unique to Miami. Annually, 3-5 dance, theater and multi-media artists are selected for this initiative. In addition to a commissioning fee, the artists receive substantial rehearsal time in The Light Box, full production support & professional development assistance.

Through Here & Now, Miami Light Project has commissioned work from more than 80 South Florida-based artists. Over 30 of those artists have gone on to perform that work in 14 states and 15 countries for an estimated audience of 20,000 people world-wide. In 2008, Miami Light Project’s Here & Now program received a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of the Knight Arts Challenge, a matching grant program to help transform the South Florida arts.
