Rubric for Inferential Statistics Project

The goals below are from the assignment sheet. I evaluate your success in achieving each on a 5-point scale. [5pts=completely achieves goals, 4 pts=achieves goal, with 1 substantial exception, 3 pts= achieves goal, with 2 substantial exceptions, 2 pts=approaches goal, but serious deficiencies, 1pt=some progress toward meeting goal, but serious deficiencies, 0 pts=does little to achieve goal] Grade-equivalent of point scores: A=90 points, B= 80 points, C=70 points, et cetera.

Evaluation Elements

/ Weigh-ted
Score
1) You investigate a good research question and make a strong case for its interest, importance, and/or connection to business administration. You make the question plain to your reader. You tell a plausible story about how the independent variable(s) affect the dependent variable. That story, along with the interpretation of your results, is at least somewhat informed by the relevant academic literature. You connect the research question to your null & alternative hypotheses, and embody a skeptical position toward the research question in your null hypothesis. / 5
2) You test the hypothesis correctly. Your data are appropriate for the hypothesis; you explain and document them well. You clean your data carefully. If your data have shortcomings, you specify them. If you collected your own data, you seemed to do it carefully and appropriately. Reading your paper and Excel workbook, I can tell how you prepared the data and did your statistical tests. / 5
3) You explain well the hypothesis test, its result, and the conclusions one should draw. If you ran a regression, you discuss the interpretation, statistical significance, and practical significance of the coefficients you estimated. You discuss, at least briefly, whether the relevant assumptions (to justify the hypothesis test you carried out) are fulfilled. / 5
4) Your paper is clearly written, is well organized, and has unified paragraphs. Sentences utilize standard spelling, standard grammar, and the active voice. Sentences are concise and read smoothly. Words are well chosen. / 5 / [1) to 4)] *4=
Sum of 1) 2), 3),&4) / 20.0 / 80.0
5) Either the technique you use to test your hypothesis, or the data set you utilized, was challenging. / 5
6) You included charts or tables that you created using Excel, effectively describing the data or otherwise supporting the text of the paper. In addition, you included a table presenting the results of your statistical work. For example, if you estimate a linear regression model you should include a table presenting the coefficients estimated, their t-statistics, r2, and any other regression statistics you discuss. If you estimate a linear regression, you should also include a table with means and standard deviations for all variables included. All tables maximize information as a ratio to ink (no extra decimals, etc.), are numbered and labeled, and are referred to in the text of the paper. / 5
7) You cite all outside sources using MLA style (see Section 2.3.2 of “ESW”). You use quotation marks when borrowing words from another author. / 5
8) You limit the paper to 1500 words, upload a copy of it to Turnitin, and deposit an Excel workbook containing all your calculations and data in learning.up.edu. You list the number of words in the paper at the end of the paper’s text (to count words in MS Word, click on Tools, Word Count). / 5
