¡Ay No! The economy is not doing well and drastically affecting our world. Travel and tourism has dropped significantly, especially within the 21 Spanish Speaking nations. We need to figure out a way to boost travel. The Travel Channel is the leading media destination for people who want to experience their world and immerse themselves in new cultures. They are hosting a contest to choose the best applicant for its special edition feature “This Country in Review”. The team to represent their country in the most interesting and unique way will win and have their country spotlighted on the new T.V. show- Go GLOBAL!

Here are your TEAM’S TASKS:

1. Create one team scrapbook on your country – using information gathered on 8 different topics (10 if you are in a group of five).

2. Design a presentation (Keynote/PowerPoint/iMovie) to convince the rest of theclass to vote for your country as the one they would most want to visit. The team that gets the most votes will earn an additional 10 pts.to their grade.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. To work cooperatively in a group.
  2. All projects must include 8 topics (6 for groups of three).
  3. Scrapbooks must include:
  4. ______A Fact Sheet (see attached).
  5. ______A map of the country with major cities, bordering countries/bodies of water, and natural features (mountains, lakes, etc…) noted.
  6. ______The country’s flag, with a description of it’s meaning
  7. ______A bibliography which sites ALL sources including pictures (go to SMS Library website (citation machine))
  8. ______Two research topics per person. Each Research Topic page has to include at least 4 paragraphs (six sentence minimum in each paragraph) in your own words and have 2 pictures/illustrations of each topic (with a caption under each).
  9. Presentations must include:
  10. ______At least one visual (picture or video clip) per topic.
  11. ______Slides with no more than twenty words (IF you are doing a Keynote or PowerPoint presentation).
  12. ______Information about each topic that reflects what is written in your scrapbook
  13. Presentations must be between 5 and 8 minutes in length. Groups will lose points for a presentation that is too short OR too long.

Segment #1 Extreme Natural Beauty

You are very organized and pay attention to the incredible! While you are working to complete this part of the project, you will search for the most exotic and beautiful destinations in this country. Look for at least 3 amazing places in your country! Answer these 4 questions about each: 1. What can you do at this place? 2. What’s special about it? 3. What equipment would you need to experience this place fully? 4. How would you get there from the nearest city?

Segment #2 Foodies

You love to eat! While you are working to complete this part of the project, you will search for the most delicious and unique foods. Look for unique appetizers, main courses and desserts. Find 1) Vegetarian options, 2) Specialty desserts, 3) Food you would not consider eating or may not have ever heard of, 4) what do street vendors sell (a la NY City Hot Dogs/ Pretzels), 5) Are there any unique styles of dining?

Segment #3 Fiestas Fantásticas

When you travel to new places, you like to party and to immerse yourself in the culture. While you are working to complete this part of the project, you will search for fun and interesting holidays and/or festivals! Look for at least 3 different holidays/festivals and tell us about them. 1. What time of year you could celebrate this holiday/festival? 2. How could you participate in this holiday/festival? 3. What precautions would you need to take (if any)?

Segment #4 To Cure an Art Attack

As an arts expert, your job is to look for the most fascinating forms of art in this country. You are looking at this country’s art, artists, music, musicians, museums, fashion, etc… and need to find the most exceptional forms of art that you can. Look for at least 3 forms of art. 1. Find a form of art that is surprising and explain why. 2. Select a form of art that you would want for a traveling exhibit or performance in NY. Explain what it is and why you would want people in NY to see it. 3. Choose a form of art you would like a replica of or a souvenir of and explain. Think about who created this art… Where it is located… and What is the religious/cultural meaning behind it / if any?

Segment #5 Sportsaholic

You are always on the go! When you travel, you love to be involved! While you are working to complete this part of the project, you will be searching for fun sports and activities to do. 1) What sports are played? 2) Where are the played? 3) Who are the famous athletes/teams in the country? 4) What appeal would your country have for sports/adventure freaks? 5) Find out how a novice would be able to participate in a sport or adventurous activity. 6) Look for a really unique sport or activity that you have never seen or heard of.

Segment #6 Miss Manners

You know how important it is to discuss our etiquette before traveling to any country. You should learn about the cultural traditions, customs, gestures and manners. 1. Determine how difficult it would be for you to follow the cultural traditions, customs, gestures and manners. 2. Which cultural tradition, gesture, custom or manner do you think would be the hardest to remember/follow and why? 3. Identify a cultural tradition, custom, gesture or manner you do at home which would be interpreted differently in your country. 4. What should we know about the cultural norms in your country?

Segment #7 Fun For Everyone

Not only is important to persuade adults to visit this country, but you know how important family is. While you are working to complete this part of the project, you will be searching for at least 3 different activities. 1. Find something your sibling would like to do. 2. Find something your parents would like to do. 3. Find something the entire family would enjoy!

Segment #8 Economista

Before visiting, we will need to know how valuable the US dollar is in your country. What are items that one can buy on the streets in your country? How about the local stores? What are some of the largest companies in your country, and what do they export to other nations? How is your country handling the current economic recession? What is your country’s currency?

Segment #9Historian

Knowing about another country’s history can make anyone’s visit there more appreciable. Tell us about the ancient inhabitants of your country. Can we visit any remains of their civilizations? Where can we go to find out more about the colonization/formation of your country as we know it today. Where can we go to find out more about any notable conflicts or events that have happened since your country achieved independence?

Segment #10 You Name the Segment

This segment you get to name. Figure out what you want to research and write about it. Why would this be important for us to know and want to know when visiting your country? Don’t forget, you are working towards getting people to want to visit your country.

~GRADING~

Your work will be evaluated by your other group members,the class and by your teacher. Your group members will rate the quality of your participation between 1 and 4,4 being above average participation and 1 being no orextremely little participation.

Your class will be The Travel Channel Judges and vote on the best Country portfolio (You cannot vote for your own country). The winning group will earn 10 extra points on their project.

Your teacher will average the grades you receive fromyour group members to determine your individual score. This score will go in the first block of the rubric. This will countfor 1/5 of your grade. Be sure that you actively participate in the project. This project is worth 200 points.

The rest of your grade will be a group grade evaluated by your teacher as outlined in the rubric.

  • Projects will be graded on a scale from 0-20 regarding how neat, complete, and colorful they are. Pictures with no captions, pages with sloppy layout, or pages without any pictures/illustrations at all will lose points.

  • Topics that do not contain specific examples will lose points

Points will be rewarded for presentations that are smooth, engaging, and that fit into the 5-8 minute range.

Bibliography 10 points

Two sources must be cited for all topics. All pictures must be cited as well. Citations missing will cost your group ½ point each. Bibliographies not done in MLA style will lose 5 points.

Fact Sheet 10 points

The information from the fact sheet must be re-written into your scrapbook in a neat and organized manner. Fact sheets will lose points if copied sloppily. Groups will lose 1 point for each question left unanswered. Groups will lose 5 points if the fact sheet from this packet is simply torn out and placed in the scrapbook.
