Long Beach

Scenario:
As a middle school student, there may be times when you want to go to a friend’s house, or get home from a friend’s house and no one is available to drive you.
Here are three options to get around Long Beach:

- The City of Long Beach Bus (
- Walking
Part I:
Identify at least fivefactors that could impact your decision as to which option you might choose.
Part II:
Let’s imagine you are in a rush and walking is no longer an option. What option do you choose, Social Bicycles or The City of Long Beach Bus? Why? Give at least three different reasons why you chose this option.
Part III: Define all variables used in your equations.
- Formulate an equation that shows how much money you would spend on Social Bicycles for any number of rides (without buying the monthly or season pass).
- Formulate an equation that shows how much money you would spend on The City of Long Beach Bus for any number of rides.
Part IV:
The taxi service is another option Long Beach has for transportation. The taxi company charges $5.50 as an initial fee plus $0.50 per mile (for only whole number miles). Use the information below to help you find the cost of each method of travel.
It is 3:00PM on a Friday. You are traveling from Long Beach Middle School to Frank’s Trattoria (1085 West Beech Street) to meet friends for pizza. Determine the cost and approximate travel time for each of the options below. Use Google Maps for walking, driving (taxi & bus), and biking directions. Note that the fee for social bicycles is pro-rated to the minute.The following information will be helpful.
