JOB DESCRIPTION

BUILDING AIDE

QUALIFICATIONS: Possess a pleasant, helpful attitude toward children.

Possess ability to work well with other adults.

Possess ability to communicate effectively w/children.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

Essential Functions:

§  Supervise and maintain order in the cafeteria according to the procedures and guidelines established by the building principal and Hempfield Area School District.

§  Direct students in and out of the cafeteria.

§  Assist students who are having difficulty with routine lunch tasks such as opening milk cartons, unwrapping utensils, etc.

§  Report concerns and/or problems to classroom teacher or principal depending on the nature of the problem.

Non-Essential Functions:

§  Assist with selling milk as requested by building principal.

§  Assist in cleaning tables as requested by building principal.

§  Assist in setting up and taking down tables as requested by building principal.

§  Perform such other related duties as directed.

GUIDELINES FOR BUILDING AIDES:

Building aides duties shall be confined to non-instructional activities of the elementary program. These duties shall include, but are not necessarily limited to, monitoring hallways, classrooms and lunchrooms when deemed necessary.

Building aides, when supervising non-instructional pupil activities, do not stand in loco parentis (in place of a parent) status to pupils and are not legally empowered to regulate pupil behavior by punishment or other similar disciplinary measures. These are responsibilities which cannot be delegated below the professional level. Pupil’s misbehavior should be reported to the proper professional employee by the building aide.

GUIDELINES FOR HELPING TO MAINTAN PROPER LUNCHROOM CONDITIONS:

1. State and Federal laws permit only authorized employees in the kitchen area during serving time.

2. No student is to be forced to eat food served. Our obligation is to provide a balanced meal. We are not to force a child to eat his/her lunch. We should, however, encourage good food and eating habits.

3. Building aides are not permitted to eat while on duty.

4. According to state and federal laws, children are not permitted to exchange food.

5. Building aides and children are not permitted to take uneaten food from the lunchroom.

6. Children should be permitted to talk in conversational tones. The lunchroom should convey a comfortable and friendly environment.

7. Children who are misbehaving should be reported to the proper professional employee.

8. Children are permitted to go to the lavatory after obtaining permission from the building aide.

9. Children should go directly back to their rooms after eating lunch.

10. In case of an accident during lunch period, the classroom teacher, principal or nurse should be notified.

11. Building aides are not permitted to use teacher faculty rooms.

12. Building aides are to assist students in the cafeteria.

Terms of Employment: Each day of the school year that the cafeteria is open.
