GROUP VISITS - SUMMER 2014

This magical five-acre garden lies in a beautiful setting below historic Helmsley Castle in the grounds of Duncombe Park. Built in 1758 to supply Duncombe Park House with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers the gardens were abandoned in the 1970s.The garden restoration began in 1994 led by Alison Ticehurst whose unfailing enthusiasm motivated a team of hard–working volunteers to tackle this massive project. Sadly Alison died in 1999, but her dream of restoring the garden and offering horticultural therapy in a tranquil environment continues.

Helmsley Walled Garden is now a registered charity. It employs two full-time gardeners and has the support of an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Around 20,000 visitors come each year to explore the vine houses and discover the individual garden areas, admiring the magnificent towering walls with their espalier trained fruit trees. Other original features include the central dipping pond and 250-year-old HL hinges on the garden side doors.

Spring 2001 saw the opening of the fully restored central Glass House and 2005 the restored Vinery and Orchard House. 2009 saw three new areas to the garden; a Sensory garden, a Physic garden and a 60m border transformed into an Exotic border which can be tended by our regular volunteers with special needs. Our large herbaceous border has also been completely replanted to an exciting ‘Hot’ design. Other areas include a spring garden, organic vegetable gardens, rose beds, scented borders and many tranquil corners. We update and improve with the help of our volunteers, and with the help of donations, introducing new plants and small sculptures or artefacts. In 2013 work began on our clematis garden, this area houses a range of shrubs, clematis and annual bedding schemes.

Plant Centre Shop: We sell a wide range of garden tools, irrigation products, fertilisers, compost, garden products, garden artefacts, greetings cards, jams, chutneys and honeys.

Plant Sales: We have a plant centre stocking a wide variety of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, bedding plants, herbs, climbing plants etc at very reasonable prices.
