The Zoological Garden in Wroclaw was founded in 1865, but it wasn't until the end of the 19th century that appropriate areas were built to meet the requirements of exotic animals (e.g., elephants, monkeys, as well as the Nature House). In the first decade of 20th century the collection of rare animals and ornamental plants was expanded by approximately 100 species. In 1921 the Zoological Garden was closed due to destruction and the economic crisis following World War I. It reopened in 1927. During the inter-war period pavilions for monkeys, bears, seals, wisents (European bison) and antelopes opened. Many animals were lost and buildings destroyed when World War II raged through Europe. The University of Wroclaw reopened the zoo on July 16, 1948 with a restricted number of animals - approximately 150.
As a result, 1998 is the 50th anniversary of zoo's existence within the Polish borders.

Today, as half a century ago, Wroclaw Zoo is very popular among Poles, foreign tourists and specialists in this domain. It is worth noting that nearly half the visitors are adults.

Today the zoo covers the area of 33 hectares with a collection of 6815 animals of 559 species. About 100 species reproduce in the zoo environment, increasing the number of these invaluable natural treasures.

The Garden was established as a scientific institution of WroclawUniversity in 1811, the year of its foundation. It owes its existence to consecutive passion and zeal for collecting, studying and cultivating plants, and is a result of acclimatization research and continual enrichment of the collection with new species and varieties. The plants grown here come both from natural sites and botanical gardens, the staff permanently co-operating with ca 300 gardens worldwide. The plants, grouped in sections, provide material for classes and scientific research. The Garden gives schoolchildren and students an opportunity to learn botany through live lessons, and enables lovers of nature to find out its secrets. (A geological cross-section) One of the Gardens peculiarities is a geological cross-section of hard coal deposit from the environs of Wałbrzych, built more than 100 years ago in the alpinarium area. Dark coal-seams are separated by layers of sedimentary rocks: sandstones and shales. The section has been encrusted with fossils of extinct plants (no 1-6), which, during millions of years, turned into hard coal. Number of species and varieties: 11 500
