A Healthy Tiger is a Cool Cat

Monday, October 3

Be sure you learn your full name, your parents’ names, your address and your phone number in case you get lost or separated from your parents.

Tuesday, October 4

Talk to your parents about how and when to call 911.

Wednesday, October 5

Never put your name on your clothes, jewelry, caps or belongings where people can see it.

Thursday, October 6

Know the difference between a good secret and a bad secret. A good secret is fun to keep, like a surprise party. A bad secret feels bad to keep, and telling your parents about it doesn’t make you a “tattle tale”.

Friday, October 7

Use the “buddy system” and avoid walking or playing alone outside and in public places.

Tuesday, October 11

A stranger is anyone you do not know well. Even people you may recognize like the mailman. Just because someone looks safe or normal does not mean they are.

Wednesday, October 12

If a stranger approaches you and tries to talk you in to doing something or going with them or grabs you, yell “No!” or “Help!” or “Fire!” and fight back.

Then run away from the stranger to another adult and tell them about the stranger.

Thursday, October 13

Stay a safe distance, approximately 3 arm lengths, away from strangers and strangers’ cars.

Friday, October 14

Never tell a stranger your name or where you live.

Monday, October 17

Keep the doors and windows locked when you are home alone. If there is an open door or broken window when you get home, go to the neighbors to call 911.

Tuesday, October 18

Answer the doorbell by asking “Who is it?” Never just open the door first. When you are home alone, talk through the door and say, “My parents are busy. I will tell them you stopped by.” If the person does not leave, call 911.

Wednesday, October 19

When answering the phone, never tell a stranger that you are home alone. Let the answering machine take the call or say, “Mom/Dad can’t come to the phone now, may I take a message?” If someone is making strange noises, saying scary things or not saying anything, hang up the phone and tell an adult you trust.

Thursday, October 20

Never give your last name, address or phone number to a person on the internet. It is never safe to meet Internet friends in person without your parent’s supervision and consent.

Friday, October 21

Have your parents make a list of safe adults and emergency phone numbers that you can call during an emergency when you are home alone. Make sure you know your parents’ phone numbers, where they work and where they will be if you have to stay home alone.

Monday, October 24

Families should create a home fire escape plan and practice at least twice a year. The plans should include at least two ways out of every room and a meeting place that is a safe distance from the house.

Tuesday, October 25

A grown up should be in the kitchen when the stove is on. Make sure all handles are turned away from the stove’s edge.

Wednesday, October 26

Appliances should be unplugged when not in use. All cords should be secured to prevent pulling an appliance off of the counter or table and to prevent tripping.

Thursday, October 27

Medications, cleaning supplies, matches and lighters should be kept in locked cabinets. Lighters and matches should be kept separate from cleaning supplies. Children should not touch these things unless supervised by an adult.

Friday, October 28

Children and grown ups should know their local emergency numbers, as well as the toll-free national Poison Control Hotline (1-800-222-1222). Keep these numbers posted on your fridge and by the phone.

Monday, October 31

Trick or Treat – inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering,

such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in

wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.
