Introductions and apologies
Miranda Litchfield introduced herself as the new chair of the wider partnership and welcomed everyone to the meeting.
YR 10 lifestyle survey
Clare Harmer of the West Sussex Public Health Observatory gave a presentation about the results of the lifestyle survey that they have recently conducted with all yr 10 (aged 14 –15) young people in the county.
Some of the results are as follows
· 12% of young people regularly drink to get drunk,
· 34% of drinkers are also smokers,
· girls are twice as likely as boys to be regular smokers,
· 2.9% of young people regularly use cannabis
· 1 in 5 young people have been a victim of bullying in the mast 12 months
· 1 in 5 had bullied someone else
Local Area Agreement targets for young people include
· To increase the % of young people who have never smoked from 65% in 2006 to 67% in 2009
· To increase the % of young people doing 30 mins of physical activity 3 times a week from 69% in 2006 to 72% in 2009
The report will be available in April 2007.
The observatory is currently conducting a survey of 17 –24 yr olds through further education colleges. The results of this will be available later in the year. The survey which they are using to gather the data is available on request from Elaine Thomas () 01243 785166
The results of a recent survey of older peoples lifestyles is also available and the observatory are happy to give presentations to groups on request.
Information Shop for Young People
This presentation was cancelled as the information shop were unable to attend
Young peoples engagement in rural areas
Colin Anderson of Action in Rural Sussex (AiRS) gave a presentation about the work of AiRS involving young people.
Youth Council ‘Hammered’ DVD
Jo Losack, Chichester District Council Communities team, showed a DVD that the Chichester Youth Council has produced about alcohol and the dangers around binge drinking. The DVD demonstrates the effects of alcohol on the body and how to help friends who have drunk too much.
This DVD will be distributed to secondary schools in the district along with a teachers pack detailing lesson plans and additional material to use in PSE lessons.
Revelation Church - working with young people
This presentation was cancelled as the Revelation church was unable to attend
Local Network fund
Colin Anderson of Action in Rural Sussex (AiRS) gave a presentation about the Local Network fund which is administered by AiRS. Funding is available for projects and further details are available on the website at http://www.ruralsussex.org.uk/
Big Play Lottery Fund
Sarah Peyman, Chichester District Council Sport and Leisure Officer, gave a presentation about the new lottery fund called ‘Big Play’. If anyone is interested in becoming involved in the play partnership or have any ideas for projects that can be included as part of the portfolio for a bid please contact Sarah at the District Council 01243 785166
