Awareness and Tools - Training for Trainers
Purpose of the training:
This training aims to increase skills and knowledge with health literacy supporters and others with an interest in health literacy sensitive practice to allow them to cascade information and resources to others that they come into contact with. This could either be through dedicated training sessions or as opportunistic discussions.
Who the training is for:
- People who are required to speak about health with patients/clients/public
- People who are signed up as health literacy supporters or are considering doing so
- Anyone interested in health literacy and raising awareness of this with others.
Learning outcomes:
Following the training delegates will –
- Have an increased knowledge of what health literacy is and the impact of poor health literacy on health outcomes
- Be aware of a range of evidence and resources to support further learning in relation to health literacy
- Have an understanding of some of the key techniques and tools for health literacy sensitive practice and taking universal precautions
- Feel confident in using the learning and resources provided to promote health literacy sensitive practice with others.

Training overview:
The training will be delivered over an hour webex. The training will provide an awareness of the following areas and delegates will be expected to take on further learning and reading provided via the trainer and the delegate resource pack:
- What is health literacy?
- What is the impact of poor health literacy?
- Tips and tools to support the promotion of health literacy
Delegates will be encouraged to add health literacy as a subject interest on their People Connect profile as discussions will take place within the People Connect pages and linked to this tag. They will also be encouraged to sign up to being a health literacy supporter if they have not already done so.
Training outline:
Prior to taking part in the training everyone will be asked to view the health literacy making it easy video available on the Health Literacy Place and to introduce themselves via the online discussion forum to share their experiences to date regarding health literacy. Further pre-course activities will be sent by email for delegates to consider prior to the course to support discussion.
For mixed groups the training will have general examples and discussions, where the training is being delivered to a specific group/discipline the trainer will aim to tailor discussions and examples to be relevant to the group’s practice.
