The Role of Health Education Teacher Leaders

2009 – 2010

The major emphasis during the 2009-2010 school year will be to increase teachers and school sites ability to implement research-validated health education curriculum and programs.

Teacher leaders are learners, communicators, researchers, and mentors. As such, they will provide professional development andparticipate in lesson modeling related to researchvalidated curriculum in health education.

The Health Education Teacher Leaders will include elementary, middle, and highschool teachers. The period of service for Health Education Teacher Leaders will extend from September 2009 through May2010. Health Education Teacher Leaders will receive a stipend based on the preparation and delivery of individual professional development workshops.

Commitment of Health Education Teacher Leaders

Health Education Teacher Leaders will be “experts in the classroom” advocating and committed to the implementation of health education curriculum at school sites. This checklist represents the expectations that Health Education Teacher Leaders will fulfill during the school year in order to receive compensation.

Responsibilities include:

I.Attend a professional development planning meeting at least one month prior to the workshop.

  1. Prompt and full attendance at preparation meeting.
  2. Submission of presentation outline at least two weeks prior to workshop.

II.Be familiar with and implement current research-validated district health education curriculum, best practices, andnew trends in the teaching of health.

  1. Prepare model lessons to be demonstrated at workshop by teaching them in own classroom prior to the professional development session, in order to provide student work.
  2. Infuse health education standards into workshop presentation of curricula.

III.Attend the professional development workshop.

  1. Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to starting time of workshop and stay after for a short debrief of evaluation feedback.

Qualifications:

Health Education Teacher Leaders should have the following qualifications:

  • Current employment as a fulltime teacher in SFUSD, valid teaching credential, and three or more years experience teaching health education;
  • Experience in teaching health education concepts as an interactive, studentcentered process;
  • Strong communication, presentation, problemsolving, organization, collaborative and computer skills;
  • Experience serving as a Health Advocate or Health Liaison preferred.
