Highlights from DAILY PLANET’s “Dissecting Disaster Week” include:

Tornado Shelters

Surviving an EF-5 twister is completely possible – if you have the right place to go. DAILY PLANET investigates the disastrous path of the tornado that tore through Moore, Oklahoma, and the surrounding neighbourhoods on May 20th. Despite overwhelming evidence in support of shelters and above-ground safe rooms, there are still many people along tornado alley who are unprepared. DAILY PLANET follows engineer and architect Larry Tanner and his team from Texas Tech University. They're on a mission to meet homeowners who survived and find out if the shelters that were tested and approved in their lab stood up to the violent forces of the deadly EF-5 Oklahoma twister.

Train Crash Forensics

When the twisted metal of a rail disaster cools, investigators begin the painstaking process of unravelling just what went wrong. In the aftermath of the Lac-Megantic, Quebec tragedy, DAILY PLANET goes behind-the-scenes to meet a forensics team tasked with dissecting rail disasters, and heads to the lab to watch as they use the latest tools to get the truth on track.

Alberta Flood Research

It came with little warning…a spring flood that washed out communities and left billions of dollars in damage in its wake. As Southern Alberta picks up the pieces, DAILY PLANET heads into the Rockies on a chopper with a team of scientists to find out just what happened, and predict future floods they say can…and will…be in the forecast…

Mr. Krakatoa

Uppsala, Sweden is about as far away from Indonesia as one could imagine. But, if the infamous volcano Krakatoa – which erupted in1883 killing tens of thousands of people – is ready to blow this is where you’ll find the answer! Uppsala University is home to one of the top-rated geological research centres on the planet and home to Krakatoa expert Valenin Troll.

Hamburg Bomb Squad

As far as disasters go, the Second World War is the biggest in history. It was one massive disaster and the planet is still cleaning up the mess. That’s quite literally true in Hamburg, Germany, where they’ve still got thousands of unexploded bombs underfoot. DAILY PLANET spends the day with the city’s bomb squad as they train to dissect a bomb underwater very, very carefully.
