75%, 10-month exempt Coordinator/12-month Coach
SALARY: $18,840 for a 75%, 10-month renewable contract (July and August non-scheduled)/Student Programs Coordinator (pro-rated for first year). $5,800 for a 12-month renewable stipend contract/Head Women’s Volleyball Coach (pro-rated for first year). Part-time teaching contracts may be available for teaching conditioning and theory classes, salary could be up to an additional $5,728 per year.

Big Bend Community College is a rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State and accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend Community College serves approximately 5,000 students annually, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,100, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site and online instruction.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position consists of separate and distinct responsibilities within the Student Activities Department and the Athletics Department.

The Student Programs Coordinator under direction coordinates and performs responsible work in support of non-instructional student activities, including ASB, clubs, and other student organizations. This includes: game room oversight, chaperone evening and weekend events, coordinating activities taking place during campus athletic games, and oversight of intramural activities/programs. This position reports to the Director of Student Activities

The Head Volleyball Coach is responsible for all aspects of maintaining a collegiate sport program, such as recruiting athletes, teaching skills and sports fundamentals, and preparing the team for collegiate competition. This position reports to and works closely with the Director of Athletics, keeping him/her abreast of all planning, organizing, staff and development of BBCC’s volleyball program.

This position will work some evenings and weekends.

SUPERVISES:

ASB Executive Officers and Programmers.

Students attending ASB events and participating in Intramural events.

Students in the game room.

Volleyball players.

Assistant Volleyball Coaches.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary essential duties and responsibilitiesinclude but will not be limited to the following:

Student Activities:

  • Answers phones and greets students, employees, and visitors to the Student Activities Office. Resolves problems and responds to inquiries regarding rules, regulations, policies, department procedures, and services.
  • Handles cash according to BBCC procedures; counts money weekly with the ASB Treasurer; balances ASB and Club accounts monthly; prepares reports, purchase orders, invoices, and contracts for signature.
  • Provide oversight to the gameroom including locking and unlocking the area daily, as well as maintaining a clean and orderly activity area. Also provide oversight to clubs, weekend and evening activities, intramural activities, and activities during athletic events.
  • Work closely with event performers and agents addressing technical riders. Ensure appropriate paperwork is completed for Purchasing, the Bookstore, and the Business Office.
  • Prepare flyers, posters, tables, charts, and graphs using such software programs as Microsoft Office Suite and Photoshop. Proofread material as needed.
  • Assist with New Student Orientation, Graduation, Star Night, Student Recognition Night, and leadership training/retreat/conferences.

Athletic Department:

  • Teach athletic program techniques and skills at a level appropriate for collegiate competition.
  • Develop, organize and conduct a comprehensive practice and season game schedule. Provide day-to-day supervision of players and assistant coaches. Report team game results to the NWAC office and to local news media.
  • Recruit quality student-athletes in accordance with college policies and Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAC) conference regulations. Maintain and manage student-athlete scholarship awards.
  • Assist with advising and registration of students; actively aid in monitoring and supporting successful academic endeavors of student-athletes.
  • Arrange team travel including driving, if necessary, submitting advance travel requests, and securing lodging when needed.
  • Maintain and manage a budget and track team and program expenditures to ensure spending is appropriate and within the college provided budget and within Title IX guidelines. Conduct and organize fundraising efforts to supplement team budget provided by college. Complete and process paperwork in an accurate, timely manner; complete the purchasing of appropriate athletic supplies and equipment.
  • Implement NWAC policies, Board and Administrative policies and, when necessary, help provide discipline for student-athletes.
  • Represent the college at conference coaches meetings.
  • Ensure proper condition of fields or appropriate venue and equipment. Maintain and track an inventory of sport equipment and uniforms and scheduled replacement of those items.
  • Work cooperatively with college staff and personnel. Maintain a demeanor on the field/court that is professional and sportsmanlike and exhibit behavior away from the field/court that is representative of the college’s and athletic department’s mission and policies. Ensure student-athlete behavior is appropriate, both on the field/court and away from the field/court and discipline according to the college’s and athletic department’s policies.

OTHER WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensures compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college’s values.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A strong commitment to the Student-Athlete concept and a working knowledge of the NWAC rules and regulations.
  • High school and/or college level playing and/or coaching experience.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Suite of programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, and PowerPoint).
  • Previous experience coordinating or administering programs.
  • Ability to communicate knowledge and skills both in oral and written form to students of diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Unrestricted driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or will obtain as per condition of employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the mission, programs and students of a comprehensive community college.
  • Demonstrated multicultural experience.
  • Previous experience with Photoshop.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Perform moderate physical effort, lift/carry up to 50 lbs., unassisted.
  • Ability/endurance to stand/walk for prolonged, extensive or considerable time.
  • Occasional reaching/stooping/bending/kneeling/crouching.
  • Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
  • Some travel required.
  • Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with faculty, staff, professionals, students, and the public.
