POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR BOARDING & INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

REPORTS TO:DEPUTY PRINCIPAL HEAD OF SECONDARY SCHOOL

Purpose

The Director Boarding & International Students is responsible for overseeing the welfare of all boarders and boarding staff in the Residential College as well as all international students (whether they be boarding or day students) at the school. This position is the point of contact for parents/guardians of boarding and international students and will facilitate communication between the family and the school (by telephone, email or via a translator).

The Director Boarding & International Students will comply with and enforce the School’s legal obligations in relation to duty of care, child protection, WH&S, risk assessment and privacy guidelines as well as CRICOS compliance to maintain accreditation. This position will undertake all associated duties relating to Boarding and International Students as deemed appropriate by the Principal or her delegate.

Reports to:

All employees at Ravenswood are answerable to the Principal. On a day to day basis the Director Boarding & International Students reports to the Deputy Principal Head of Secondary School.

Key Responsibilities

Pastoral Care

  • Liaise with Deputy Principal Head of Secondary School, Director Student Wellbeing and the Chaplain in the development and implementation of programmes to support the emotional, spiritual and personal development needs of boarding and international students.
  • Oversee the day to day pastoral needs of the boarding and international students and ensure that they are appropriately supported in their personal and academic life.
  • On call to the Residential College and staff for emergency issues during term time.
  • Supervision of all Residential College Supervisors, Assistants and Tutors affirming them in their roles as carers.
  • Establish a clear code of conduct in the boarding and international student community.
  • Track student health and wellbeing, liaising with the Director Student Wellbeing, School Nurse and taking boarders and international students to appointments where necessary, particularly on weekends.
  • Management of boarder’s and international students escort duties, leave, travel arrangements, evening excursion travel arrangements and excursion catering.
  • Liaise with PDHPE to ensure there are no barriers for boarding students to participate in Saturday sport.
  • Liaise with the Parent Coordinator of the Boarder Support Scheme.
  • Supervision of the Boarders Worship program in conjunction with the School Chaplain.
  • Oversee the election of student leaders in the boarding community and work closely with them during their time in office.
  • Supervision of both senior and junior homework, monitoring the Prep Tutor’s work.

International Students

  • Liaison with Director Marketing & Manager International Enrolments regarding potential enrolments of international students.
  • Establish rapport and relationship with the international student and their family prior to commencement at the school, providing induction information and support to ensure a smooth introduction to the school.
  • Review language testing from international students and recommend for enrolment.
  • Liaise with the Director Wellbeing regarding accommodation arrangements for international students including homestay visits, interviewing and reviewing guardian arrangements, travel and visa arrangements and other requirements.
  • Ensuring all homestay and other accommodation arrangements comply with CRICOS guidelines.
  • Implement and monitor CRICOS checks relating to the academic and wellbeing needs of international students.
  • Prepare a report on each international student on a Semester basis outlining the social, emotional and academic support needs of each student.
  • Prepare and monitor the % attendance and other reports for international students.
  • Advocate for international students within the school community.
  • Implement ESL/EAL programmes to meet the needs of international students with Learning Enrichment, Head of Junior School and the ESL/EAL teachers.
  • Prepare, monitor and regularly review a student language profile for each international student.
  • Develop, implement and coordinate an intensive bridging language course for international students prior to the commencement of term 1.
  • Programme development of boarder support for international students.
  • Induction of visiting international students (global exchange) and teachers.
  • Global experience student support.

Staff

  • Maintain an effective and professional contact at all times with staff in order to manage the smooth running of the Residential College.
  • Be available to staff to discuss with them and assist them to achieve the vision and principles of the Residential College.
  • Participate in the selection of staff in consultation with the HR Manager and the Deputy PrincipalHead of Secondary School.
  • Counsel staff, as required and in consultation with the Deputy PrincipalHead f Secondary School, in matters which affect the nature and quality of the service provided to boarders and international students.
  • Hold regular meetings with staff and stakeholders regarding the day to day running of the Residential College.
  • Supply the Minutes of these meetings to the Deputy Principal Head of Secondary School and the Deputy Principal Learning Innovation.

Supervision of Contractors

  • Management of the cleaning contract for the Residential College and liaison with the cleaning staff.
  • Management of the catering contract for the Residential College and liaison with Scolarest regarding menu’s, dietary and nutritional requirements of boarders.
  • Management of the in–house laundries and contract launderer.

Administration

  • Generate term rosters and organise cover for absent staff within the guidelines of the applicable industrial instrument.
  • Liaise with Human Resources regarding HR and WH&S issues.
  • Work assiduously to ensure a safe environment for the boarding community with regular emergency drills, updating the skills of boarding staff in relation to first aid, operating fire equipment and monitoring of general security.
  • Oversee all boarding comments twice annually for the boarders’ school reports.
  • Management of Parents’ Corner and Short Stay Boarder programs.
  • Regularly update the Boarders Handbook, Boarding Staff Handbook and all forms related to boarding, ensuring compliance with current legislation.
  • Purchase items related to the Residential College, prepare an annual budget and operate a Petty Cash tin.

Facilities and Maintenance

  • Monitor linen, crockery, cutlery, glassware and all kitchen equipment.
  • Oversee the repair or replacement of Residential College property in conjunction with the Property Manager.

As a manager in the school you will be required understand the Work Health and Safety Act, to understand the hazards and risks that are associated with areas under your control and to identify, apply and verify appropriate means for management of those risks.

Hours of Work:

A flexible working arrangement is in place for this position. The position may be required to work during school hours and in the evenings, in split shifts and on the weekends as required. The remuneration for this position is inclusive of all penalties and allowances.

Concluding remarks

The Director Boarding & International Students will be expected from time to time to attend meetings and participate in management and operational activities and planning outside of term time including during term breaks.
