Job Purpose:

  • Lead on developing creative and effective designs for publications and other materials, infographics, exhibitions, displays and merchandise.
  • Ensure any designs produced internally and externally comply with corporate guidelines.
  • Liaise with external design companies to make sure their work reaches the required standard and complies with guidelines.
  • Trainand support colleagues to carry out basic design or proofing tasks using InDesign or other software.
  • Ensure Social Care Wales keeps up-to-date with the latest design-related software and computer technologies.
  • It is essential that the post-holder is capable of carrying out all tasks and responsibilities equally competently in Welsh and English.

Main Duties:

Provide creative and original design solutions for a broad range of products, including publications, display materials, merchandise and digital items, such as mobile applications.

Work closely with colleagues in other teams, helping them clarify their requirements, so that an effective design brief can be agreed and delivered.

Advise colleagues on the best design approach to connect effectively with target audiences and convey messages successfully.

Prepare rough drafts and ideas for concepts, graphics and layouts, before revising final designs in response to colleagues’ comments and gaining final approval.

Agree with colleagues realistic timelines and deadlines for all design work.

Where design jobs have to be sent to an external contractor, to act as the main liaison point, ensuring work is completed to the required standard.

Ensure all designed materials are compliant with the corporate guidelines for Social Care Wales.

Manage all the specialist hardware allocated to design work, including an Apple iMac and Wacom graphics tablet.

Keep abreast of new and updated computer graphics and design software and draw to the attention of the Senior Communications Officer any developments or opportunities that might need to be addressed.

Develop, maintain and update a detailed record of projects, so that colleagues are aware of current progress at any time.

Train colleagues in the Communications and Public Affairs team and other teams on the basics of using software that will enable them to do simple design work and proofing changes themselves. Also, to provide them with ongoing support, as required.

Assist with the team’s responsibilities for editing and publishing on the Social Care Wales website.

Provide effective, efficient and economic resource management, budgeting and monitoring for all areas of responsibility.

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications / A degree in graphic design or a related field.
Evidence of continuous professional development
Knowledge / Up-to-date knowledge of best practice approaches to design.
Experience / Experience of working as a graphic designer, either in-house or as a freelance. / Experience in the public sector
Skills & Attributes / Creative and artistic, with the ability to think of new approaches to communicating ideas to our audiences. This should be evidenced with a professional portfolio that demonstrates creativity and originality.
Analytical and able to see the work from the perspective of groups at whom it’s targeted.
Excellent communicator, making sure designs accurately reflect the desired message(s) to be conveyed and effectively express information.
Strong computer skills and excellent working knowledge of design packages, particularly InDesign, and other Adobe software, like PhotoShop.
Ability to grasp the needs of colleagues and propose practical solutions.
Able to manage multiple projects at the same time, each with a different timeline.
Confidence, to present and explain ideas to colleagues, including senior management.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Professional approach to time, costs and deadlines.
Able to read, write and speak Welsh.
