Key Responsibilities

Provision of clinical anaesthesia services for Fiona Stanley Hospital to surgical & other specialties and non-specialties, including on-call duties. Also responsible for non-theatreduties including contributing to the ongoing registrar educational programand duty anaesthetist responsibilities.
Fiona Stanley Hospital will be the largest head and neck cancer unit in WA. It will also undertake a large amount of ENT and Maxillofacial surgery. This role provides experience in the management of patients with difficult and congenitally deformed airways using a range of video, fibre optic and direct visual aids to intubation. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to attend surgical airway workshops and the Royal Perth Hospital ‘wet lab’.

Brief Summary of Duties

1. CLINICAL

  • Theatre duties comprising of a mix of elective and emergency lists, with and without direct consultant supervision. Approximately 50% of clinical time will be in airway subspecialty related duties.
  • Ensure all patients undergoing anaesthesia are adequately assessed and appropriately prepared prior to having any procedure involving anaesthesia services.
  • Assistance with advanced airway management on listsnot assigned to where required.
  • Participate in the Medical Emergency Team for attendance to the deteriorating patient.
  • Ensure the compilation of high quality patient records.
  • Function according to the recommended level of supervision as outlined in the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA)documents and to ensure that his/her supervising consultant is kept informed of clinical events as appropriate.
  • Respect for the dignity of patients and fellow workers, and for the confidentiality of patients’ medical information.

2. ADMINISTRATION, EDUCATIONandRESEARCH

  • Approximately 10% of rostered work hours will be clinical support time.
  • Participate in and contribute to the development and provision of training and education of anaesthetic trainees, anaesthesia technicians, Resident Medical Officers and other personnel.
  • Undertake continuing postgraduate medical education and training, and participate actively in educational and quality assurance activities. This includes CICO emergency response training of consultant staff.
  • Participate in ongoing and novel departmental research as appropriate.
  • Progress towards the Fellowship of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA), including the requirements of examinations, courses and formal project work.
  • Participate in in-training assessments, and acceptance of feedback from consultant staff.
  • Recognize areas of deficiency, and appreciate when to seek guidance and support.
  • Non-theatre duties include duty anaesthetist responsibilities to assist in coordinating the running of theatres and outside theatre areas.

3. QUALITYASSURANCE

  • Participate in and support quality improvement programs.
  • Uphold the code of ethics of the medical profession.
  • Participation in activities to promote a positive image of the specialty to professional colleagues and to the public.
  • Duty allocation, rosters, teaching activities and clinical review within the department in accordance with Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) policy documents.
  • Contribute where necessary to the preparation and review of protocols and procedures pertinent to the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine.

4. OTHER

  • Comply with SMHS Policies and Procedures, MHS code of conduct and other relevant legislation.
  • Clinical and administrative duties as determined by theHead of Department or their delegate.
  • To perform any other relevant duties as requested by the Head of Department or their delegate.
  • Rostering & sub-specialty opportunities are equivalent for both ANZCA & non-ANZCA trainees.

SMAHS Duties

  • Responsible for ensuring, as far as practicable, the provision of a safe working environment in consultation with staff under their supervision.
  • Performs duties in accordance with the relevant Occupational Safety and Health, and Equal Opportunity Legislation and WA Health Code of Conduct.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Government, WA Health, South Metropolitan Health Service and Departmental / Program Specific Policies and Procedures.
  • Participates in a continuous process to monitor, evaluate and develop services and performance.

Work Related Requirements

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Registered as a Provisional Fellow or Fellow with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists(ANZCA) or equivalent (i.e. applicant must have passed both the written and clinical ANZCA examinations or equivalent).
  3. Demonstrated clinical and procedural experience in a range of critical care, surgical and medical disciplinesadequate to undertake the position.
  4. Demonstrated ability to provide medical education, teaching, supervision, training and support.
  5. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, their families, medical students, junior doctors, nursing and other ancillary staff and other professionals at all levels.
  6. Ability to work effectively, as a team member or leader, in a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills.
  8. Participation in continuing professional development activities including regular performance reviews and a commitment to maintain and upgrade knowledge & skills.
  9. Participate in a 24 hour on-call Anaesthesia roster and be self sufficient in transport across SMHS sites.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrate commitment to ongoing education and research in this sub-specialty.
  2. Demonstrate effective clinical problem solving in this sub-specialty.
  3. Monitors and reviews own clinical effectiveness, noting limitations and putting in place strategies to address these.
  4. Shows commitment to continuous improvement of patient outcomes.
  5. Current knowledge of legislative obligations for Equal Opportunity, Disability Services and Occupational Safety and Health, and how these impact on employment and service delivery.
