HB & MJ Thom Study Leave Award

Guidelines

CLOSING DATE: 18 NOVEMBER 2016

  1. AIM OF AWARD:

Funding to Stellenbosch University academic staff for study leave of longer than 3 months. The study leave must be taken in 2017.

  1. NUMBER OF AWARDS:

A maximum of 11awards will be made.

3.ELIGIBILITY:

3.1Applicant should be a full-time permanent or full-time contract academic staff member at Stellenbosch University (SU).

3.2Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible to apply.

3.3Applicants from all academic departments at SU are eligible.

3.4Applicant should be a South African citizen, or have South African permanent residency status.

3.5An applicant will only be eligible for an award every four years.

3.6It is strongly recommended that at least 30% of thestudy leave for which funding is sought, should be spent abroad.

3.7At least one award will be given to an application dealing with the history of a subject field.

Note:

Applicants who are early career researchers(busy with PhD or within 8years after PhD, or equivalent research experience) will get preference. However, deserving applications from established researchers will be considered.

  1. FUNDING:

4.1The maximum amount that would be awarded is R80, 000.

4.2The budget should be given, per budget item, in Part 6 of the application form. Incorrect budget calculations will immediately disadvantage an application.

4.3Any other funds applied for with other funding bodies for the same project should be indicated in the budget.

4.4Funding is neither for short visits, nor for conference attendance only. (Presentation at a conference could be an output of the research project).

5.2Curriculum Vitae of applicant, as per Addendum A of the application form.

5.3Official proof of research or study leave: to be approved by the departmental c chairperson and the department of Human Resources (Addendum B)

5.4Letter of invitation from host abroad (Addendum D)

6.RECOMMENDATION BY CHAIR/HEAD/DIRECTOR:

6.1The confidential recommendation by the departmental chair or other relevant head should be sent directly to .

6.2This document should not be attached to the application form.

6.3Please ensure that your relevant head submitted the recommendation, as the application will not be considered without such recommendation.

7.EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Criteria to be taken into account by the evaluation panel will include:

  • Track record of applicant
  • Scientific quality and viability
  • Expected outputs
  • Workplan for funding period
  • Whether the budget is realistic.
  • For at least one of the awards: to what extent the project deals with the history of a subject field
  • The recommendation from the chair/head/director

5.REPORTING:

Awardees should submit a short report within three months after the end of the study leave. Report forms are available from Izel Gordon-Rossouw at .
