Hazel Owens Elementary - Dress Code for Students

Owens does not require standardized school dress, but students are expected to follow the following guidelines in regard to school clothing.

Spirit Days:

Mondays are school spirit days at Owens. Students are encouraged to wear school shirts or sweatshirts to school.

Friday is the designated “No Excuses” spirit day at Owens. Students and faculty may wear jeans with a school or college shirt, and/or clothes that comply with the school standard of dress.

Most questions revolve around the appropriate length for dresses, skirts, shorts, etc. The following information will help you make choices that remain in compliance with district policy and campus expectations:

  • Dresses, skirts, split garments and shorts should not be shorter than three inches above the knee while maintaining dignity and modesty. All shorts must meet the length requirement including those that are worn with leggings.
  • Shorts should be hemmed or cuffed garments designed for outerwear.
  • Footwear: Closed-toed, lace-up shoes are best attire for school footwear. They prevent injuries when students are engaged in PE or on the playground during recess. Students are not allowed to wear flip-flop type shoes and we ask they only wear sandals when they are not scheduled for PE or if they are not participating in recess. Appropriate foot wear is required for participation in PE (lace up gym shoes with rubber soles).

Please avoid:

  • Cutoff shorts, wind shorts, boxer shorts, short/shorts, jogging shorts, or bicycling shorts/pants. These are not to be worn at any time (not even with leggings/tights).
  • Hair designs or cuts/colors that can create disruption are not allowed. (Example: Mohawks, slogans, etc.)
  • Flip-flops or sandals are strongly discouraged on P.E. days. For safety reasons, students are best prepared for school activities when wearing close-toed shoes.
  • Tank tops, spaghetti straps, or clothing that is cut low at the neck or underarm. Sleeveless shirts should have a shoulder width of at least 2”.
  • Clothing that exposes bare midriffs.
  • Clothing that displays obscene or suggestive language or symbols, provocative pictures, advertisement for alcoholic beverages, tobacco or narcotics, weapons, violence, inappropriate language.
  • Clothing that promotes racially-related symbols, emblems, pictures, words, or slogans.
  • Clothing that is excessively loose and/or that results in “sagging”.
  • Clothing that is see-through, provocative, or excessively tight.
  • Clothing that is frayed or torn (this includes ripped-out knees in pants, excessively frayed hemlines, distressed jeans that expose skin, etc.)

****Final determinations about the appropriateness of dressare made by the campus administrators. Parents are encouraged to contact the teacher or school office with any concerns or questions about school dress.
