COURSE NAME:ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 9

TEACHERS:Ms. Laurie [9-1, 9-2]

Mr. Jayden [9-3, 9-F]

PROGRAM RATIONALE AND PHILOSOPHY:

This course will provide students with the opportunity to develop and enhance language skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing in accordance with the program of studies and the language arts curriculum guide.

GENERAL LEARNER OUTCOMES:

Students will engage in all five language arts outcomes as they study texts and they will create their own texts in relevant situations for a variety of purposes and audiences. All of the outcomes in language arts are interrelated and interdependent; facility in one strengthens and supports facility in the others.

ORGANIZATION:

Activities and lessons are designed to develop student’s skills as writers and critical thinkers.

Students may expect a number of writing assignments as well as major projects each term based on units of study; in addition the students’ grade will include quizzes, tests and book reports. Unit exams can be expected, as well as oral presentations and cooperative group work.

Students will write their journal responses on a single loose leaf piece of paper and hand into the bin for marking. Once marked, journals are to be kept in a section of their binder for future reference.

Extra help will be available through mutual arrangement between the teacher and student.

ASSESSMENT and EVALUATION:

This course will incorporate two types of assessment. “Assessment for Learning” is a formative assessment that allows the teacher to monitor student progress during instruction. Although these tasks and assignments will have a 0% weighting, they will contain formative feedback and comments, and it is therefore essential that students complete these assignments. Completing these tasks will help students to improve their performance on tasks that are worth marks. “Assessment of Learning” is the summative assessment where students demonstrate their mastery of the skills being taught. The mark breakdown for summative assessment is as follows:

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS (Essays, Projects, Presentations, etc.)30%

MINOR ASSIGNMENTS (Worksheets, Review, Editing, etc.)25%

TESTS/QUIZZES (Unit Tests, Quizzes, Vocab, Literary Terms, Reading Comprehension)15%

MIDTERM10%

FINAL EXAM20%

TOTAL CLASS MARK 100%

The course is complete and a mark submitted when all school property, including textbooks and novels, are returned.

  • Students must use class time productively in order to be successful in the course.
  • When students’ behaviour is inappropriate, the first step is to stop the behaviour and discuss the incident with the student.
  • If the problem isn’t resolved, the second step is contact with the parent(s).
