Discussion Forum:

Course Description: This course is designed to help Emerging Leaders Academy students to begin their personal journey towards leadership. The primary focus will be to consider and identify the personal leadership qualities and professional skills through careful self- assessment. Students will practice both leadership and professionalism through planned interaction with leaders in the health care profession.

Course Outcomes:

a)Role model the Benedictine Values through professional behavior in and out of the classroom. (Communication, Professional Development, Valuing)

b)Use communication and information technology effectively and appropriately.

c)Assess personal leadership qualities and style.

d)Formulate a plan for professional growth based on entry skill level and continuing throughout the student’s time in the Emerging Leaders Academy.

b)Practices of the Benedictine Values of community, hospitality, respect for persons and service are expected from the students as they interact with members of the University of Mary and professional communities.

“Meet the Professionals” Activities

Throughout the course of the semester, students will be notified via email of opportunities to meet professionals in their career area. These opportunities will be held outside of regular class time and include the following:

a.)Job shadows

b.)Facility or departmental tours

c.)Panel discussions with professionals in a social setting

d.)One on one question/answer sessions

Every attempt will be made to provide activities for all major areas. If students wish to make contact with a professional in an area not offered, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the director and make a special request.

Attendance:

Attendance is required. Any combination of three excused/unexcused absences will result in a probationary status. A fourth absence in the same semester will result in a failing grade. University of Mary sponsored events, hospitalization and like situations is exempt from this policy and must be reported directly to the course facilitator.

Assessment:

Students will be evaluated based on meeting course objectives, class attendance, attitude toward learning, as well as class project participation.
