THE RING OF PEACE 2017

This year at the Memorial Hall we will be holding a social event on the 21st September 2017 at which one of us will receive the main Ring message and pass it on. However, this will not be the main thrust of the evening. As you may be aware, Harmston has a War Memorial / Roll of Honour to those people of Harmston who served during the First World War. It is at the Memorial Hall and the Hall is part of that Memorial. However, Harmston does not have a memorial to those from the Second World War, a situation that is about to be remedied. Ken Bavin, who is one of our senior members of the village (he was born here) has made a war memorial board. This will be populated with those people who served during the war. This will be installed in the Memorial Hall to complement the First World War memorial. It will be unveiled at the Ring event on 21 September 2017, to which all the people of Harmston and friends will be welcome. The format of the event has still to be worked on, but it will be a fun event and not a sombre affair. More details will follow in due course.

In addition, whilst the main Ring this year takes place as a part of the UN International Day for Peace 2017, the real work of the Ring comes in the Ringlet programme, where people form their own rings, which must accomplish something for their community related to peace and love.

The Harmston Memorial Hall Committee has decided to hold a Harmston Ringlet in this year's programme. This would involve a number of Harmston residents, and perhaps prominent people further afield, passing a local message around our own Ringlet. The Harmston Ringlet will take place from the 1st to 14th September. I will be organising the Ringlet together with Jo Horn and we will be looking for people to participate. From your point of view it will simply be a task of receiving a phone call, remembering the peace message that is sent and then at a given date and time ringing the next person in line and relaying the message. We will need to plan the programme carefully and we will need to have a suitable phone number and times when you would be available. If you would like to take part, and we hope that many of you will, then please contact me or Jo:

Do get in touch with Alan or Jo if you’re tempted to offer your help with the Ring of Peace – an opportunity to spread a positive message of peace – from the Heart of Harmston.
