2017-18 HARC/HARI Centre Funding

The College has approved the transformation of the Humanities and Arts Research Centre (HARC) into a Research Institute (HARI). While this will strengthen its position as a forum for interdisciplinary research it also implies that generating external grant income, especially from Research Councils, and impact will become more important than in the past. External grant income will benefit HARI since a proportion of the overheads of successful RC income will be returned to HARI, thereby enabling the Research Institute to expand its activities and support more Fellowships, Projects, Centres and other activities than has hitherto been possible.

The increased emphasis placed on generating grant income and impact is reflected in the way HARI’s Steering Committee will assess funding applications for 2017-18. Applications that can demonstrate concrete plans for using HARI funding as a first step towards generating external RC and other grant income or that have a strong impact dimension will be prioritised.

For the first time, the Humanities and Arts Research Institute (HARI) is inviting departmental Research Centres to apply for funding. Subject to budgetary approval, HARI will make a 50% contribution up to a maximum of £1,500 to support the research activities and events of Research Centres. The other 50% will have to come from the Centre. Applications from Research Centres should be interdisciplinary and involve colleagues attached to the Centre as well as other departments. The 2017-18 competition will be unrestricted in terms of theme and Fellows will be free to define their own. The competition is open to all FTE staff at Royal Holloway. Like HARI Fellowships and Projects, the HARI Centre activities will be showcased on HARI’s website.

Applications should be made by the Research Centre’s Director and should provide the names of all individuals who will be involved in the proposed research activities.

HARI Centre Funding will provide successful applicants with 50% funding which may be applied towards the pursuit of research in various ways, for example the organisation of research events, public dissemination activities, conferences or the development of a large research project and grant application.

The format and frequency of events are open, although Centre Directors will be expected to liaise with the HARI Deputy Director in planning and scheduling in particular. Successful applications are expected to generate exchange across the College and benefit a range of colleagues and students. Research must be of an interdisciplinary nature.

During their term, Centre Directors will serve on the HARI Steering Committee. At the conclusion of a project they will be expected to write a report on their project that can be published on the HARI website.

The maximum sum for which Research Centres can apply is £1,500. The application will have to demonstrate that the Centre will provide matching funding of 50%. Applications should be made on the form below. Centre Directors should consult with their Heads of Department to ensure coordination with Departmental plans.
