Course Objectives

This course is designed to allow the students the opportunity to examine the social teaching of the Church in a discussion/seminar format. This course, markedly different than the Junior level course "Life in Jesus Christ," will require the students to use the information they learned in their Junior year and develop informed opinions on the assigned reading. Students will also be required to back-up their opinions with supporting evidence from the assigned reading. It will require the student to listen carefully to his or her classmates and debate the opinions in an academic environment. The goal of the course is to expose the students to primary source documents where he or she can spend time with the documents and thereby come to a fuller understanding and appreciation of the social teaching of the Church.

The student will read the documents utilizing the lens of the major themes of the social teaching of the Church. Those themes include The dignity of human life; Call to family, community, and participation; Preferential option for the poor; Dignity of work and the rights of workers; Solidarity: individuals should work for the common good and Stewardship of God’s creation.
