CONTACT Email: oicemail: 303-655-8865

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

HBS will engage students in the study of the processes, structures and interactions of human body systems. Important biomedical concepts in the course include: communication, transport of substances, locomotion, metabolic processes, identity, and protection. The central theme will focus on how the body systems work together to maintain homeostasis and good health. The systems will be studied as “parts of a whole,” working together to keep the amazing human machine functioning at an optimal level. Students will design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of body systems, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary actions, and respiratory operation. Exploring science in action, students will work through interesting real world cases and often play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.

HBS is the second course offered in the PLTW Biomedical Sciences program. Students should have already taken PBS last year or have received instructor approval to be placed in this class. This is a yearlong course that you are committing to complete. You will receive 1 CTE and 1 Elective Science credit weighted as AP. If you should decide this class is not for you please request to drop the course within the first two weeks of school. You will not be able to drop this class after that and may receive withdraw/fail on your transcript for both semesters. The cost of consumable materials used in the biomedical sciences program is expensive. Please note that there is a course fee of $15 per semester that is charged to each student to help with these costs.

CO-Curricular Opportunity:

Students in our biomedical sciences program are highly encouraged to become members of our student organization called HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). HOSA is considered to be “co-curricular” to the biomedical program and the class will incorporate lessons and leadership training related to HOSA. Additionally members in HOSA are eligible to attend and compete at the State and National Leadership Conferences. Why join HOSA? The better question is, why not? Becoming a part of the quickest expanding organization in the fastest growing career field is nothing but beneficial to the students that choose to get involve. HOSA truly is healthcare training for students that have the desire to enter into medicine. Competitive events featured at conferences include knowledge and skills that are sure to be seen again in future education. Offering internships and scholarships, HOSA also gives members the chance to connect to health professionals that they aspire to be like one day. Additionally, leadership and communication skills are vital to success in any career, and HOSA provides just that. With symposiums by prosperous entrepreneurs, professional leadership developers, and eloquent public speakers, HOSA hands you all of the tools necessary to be successful in whatever you choose to do.

Binders:

Students are required to maintain a 3 ring binder with section dividers for this class. It is my advice to use a separate binder for this class that does not include material from other classes. Materials that are to be included in the notebook are as follows:

Section 1 –Syllabus and PLTW Resource Documents

Section 2 – Handouts and Body System Graphic Organizers

Section 3 – Graded Projects

Laboratory Journal:

Students must have a separate composition or spiral notebook to be used only as a lab journal where all research/class work is compiled by activity. The lab journal is turned in frequently for review and grading purposes.

Additional Materials:

Personal Flash drive (this is a must every day), colored pencils, calculator,

“Surviving the Extremes” by Dr. Ken Kamler. The book can be found on Amazon.com used for around $4.00 + shipping. The book is also available for E Readers. I do not have enough copies for the number of students in the course so this is a required student item. It should be purchased by end of September.

Computer Access: Students will need to be able to access the PLTW Learning Management System (LMS) online for homework and help outside of the classroom. Each student will receive a personalized log on for this system.

Grades:

It is the student’s responsibility to complete and turn in class work and homework assignments on time. In general, I will not accept late work without assessing a penalty; however, I will consider special circumstances on a case by case basis.

Your grade will be determined using the following:

80% of Semester grade will include these two categories:

30% Daily Activities: Assignments, warm-ups and binder checks 70% Formal Assessments: Quizzes, Tests, Labs, Projects/Research

20% of Semester grade will be determined by a Final Exam/End of Year Exam using Standardized Test

Letter grades will be determined using the standard 27J District high school scale.

In order to proceed to the next year PLTW Biomedical class students must pass this course with a C or higher.

Credits:

This is considered an AP class in terms of weighted GPA in which students receive 1 elective science credit and 1 CTE credit. Additionally, students may choose to apply for college credit from University of Colorado Colorado Springs. More information will be provided later this year regarding applying and paying for credit from UCCS.

Attendance/Tardies:

Students are expected to attend and be on time for each and every class. The attendance and tardy policies and procedures set forth in the student handbook will be adhered to and upheld. Students will not be able to make-up formal assessments such as tests or presentations that were missed due to an unexcused absence.

Late Work and Make-up work:

Homework, projects, labs, etc. are due at the beginning of class on the assigned day. Late work may be assessed a penalty. Late work will not be accepted if it is due to an unexcused absence. It is your responsibility to retrieve the work you missed. Do not interrupt class for make-up work. You may see me before or after school to discuss the assignments. Labs cannot be made up. If you miss a lab, a make-up assignment will be given even if you have an excused absence.

Classroom Expectations:

Be Present: In order for you to learn, you must be present. The expectation is that you are in the classroom, willing and ready to learn each day. This class is fun but it is also challenging.

Be Prepared: Bring your notebook, writing utensils and a good attitude to class.

Respectful and Courteous: Please remember you are not the only one in class. You are to treat others in a tolerant, considerate, courteous and respectful manner at all times. This includes using appropriate language, willingness to work with other members in your group, and participating fully in classroom activities. If you are having problems within groups please let me know. Failure due to one person in the group not completing their portion is not acceptable. You always have the option to complete an assignment on your own for full credit.

Laboratory Rules

1)Think twice before you do something. Know why you are doing an action, what you expect to happen, and if your action is responsible – Can someone get hurt?

2)You may not be in the room by yourself at anytime, a teacher must be present.

3)NO food or drink allowed

4)Follow directions given, NO UNAUTHORIZED EXPERIMENTS

5)No horseplay, practical jokes, running

6)Keep the area clean, put away equipment. You will not be dismissed if your station is a mess. Make sure to wash hands before leaving the room.

7)Inform me IMMEDIATELY of any: spills, glass breakage, cuts, burns, or if a chemical splashes on your skin or in your eyes.

8)Goggles are a must if we are using chemicals or heating glass. NO EXCEPTIONS.

9)Chemicals need to be disposed of properly. Follow instructions given regarding where to place used/unused chemicals.

10)Know the location of emergency equipment in the classroom

11)In case of an emergency, you are to quickly exit the room and follow the building guidelines to exit the building. You must stay with everyone in our class. I need to be able to quickly determine that everyone is accounted for and safe.

12)The emergency shut off valves are not to be touched by anyone other than an adult. If there is an emergency, your responsibility is to get out of the building safely.

Failure to follow these rules can result in expulsion from the lab for that day and directly impact your success in this class.

The HBS syllabus can be located on the PVHS website under my class page located under the Academics Tab, Science, Randall and then the specific course. I have gone over the document with students. Please take a few minutes to review the document online as it has important information about this class. If you need a hard copy please email me and I can send one home with your student.

Student Fees are $15.00 per semester. These fees are critical to supporting the learning within the classroom. Fees are used entirely to purchase consumables for labs. Please make sure that fees are paid in a timely manner. Students that have not paid the course fee may not have access to the LMS Logon for curriculum nor participate in some of the labs until those have been paid.

I encourage parents and community members to visit our classes. I do suggest that you email prior so that I can inform you regarding if a particular day might be better than another. For example you might want to see student presentations but not a test day. If you would like to have a discussion with me regarding specific concerns about your child please make an appointment. Any guests or visitors to the school must first check in to the office with a current ID.

My child and I have reviewed the information in this document. I understand that for my child to fully participate in this course there will be extra-curricular activities such as field trips and job shadowing. I understand that scientific resources such as videos used in the course are meant for educational purposes only and could include nudity or sensitive material. If my child cannot act respectful of the human body or other organisms during labs or videos they will be asked to leave the classroom and miss that learning opportunity.
