Promise Scholarship

Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals (HRBMP) is a nonprofit organization of communicators dedicated to inspiring African-American students to pursue college and media-related careers. HRBMP will award scholarships of $500 to $1,000 toHampton Roads-area high school seniors who will enroll in college this coming school year. This award is open to students pursuing any course of college studies, and is not limited to journalism studies. We request your GPA, but no minimum GPA is required to apply for this award. This scholarship is for a student who has defied social and academic odds to become a high school graduate. The winner will be notified in May.

CRITERIA

Scholarship Amount: $500 to $1,000

Student Must:

  1. Provide a copy of high school transcript
  2. Provide proof that the student has applied to and intends to attend college.
  3. Provide a list of extracurricular activities, including such things as jobs held outside of school, school clubs, community service and sports, he/she has been involved in during high school. Please list dates of activities.
  4. Provide two letters of recommendation. At least one letter should be provided by one of the student’s current or former high school teachers. The second letter can come from the following, but is not limited to: a guidance counselor, an athletic coach, a high school administrator (i.e. principal, assistant principal, etc.), an employer, etc.
  5. Write an essay between 800 to 1,200 words detailing his/her academic and social struggles, how he/she has worked to overcome them, and why pursuing higher education is critical to him/her. Student must indicate if he/she knows what career path he/shewould like to pursue, and express why they intend to pursue that path.
  6. Student should include samples of any work he/she is proud of, such as art work, essays, strong classwork, etc. Samples of work can also include work captured on DVD, such as a musical performance, etc.
