Halton Skills Competition Grades 7-8 Distance Challenge, April 5, 2016

General Information

  • The Distance Challenge will be held at Robert Bateman Secondary School on Tuesday, April 5, 2014 as part of the Halton Skills Competition
  • Teams are to consist of 3-4 students from grades 7 and 8
  • The team members that race the vehicle must be the same students that built the vehicle – outside/adult assistance should be to provide advice and direction only
  • Safety features outlined in the plan must be incorporated into the vehicle – vehicles that are deemed to be unsafe will not be allowed to participate in the competition
  • Vehicles are to be constructed at each team’s home school and transported to Robert Bateman Secondary Schoolfor the event
  • New for 2016….All teams will compete using a

Solid Rubber Wheel Assembly approx. size 13 x 2-1/2 in.

  • New for 2016 ….all cars will be equipped with a cup holder capable of holding a Large “Tim Horton” style cup that will be used to track spillage during the course of the competition
  • Schools are responsible for transporting their vehicles to and from the competition

(We will try to arrange storage so that vehicles can be transported to Robert Bateman Secondary Schoolthe day before the event; and we may be able to arrange pick-up and delivery of the vehicles by the Board’s truck)

There will be 3 sets of medals presented at the Awards Presentation for the Distance Challenge

  1. Team with the greatest accumulated distance (each team member drives the car for straight line distance from an incline)
  2. Team with the fastest time for the concourse event (This will consist of two parts: a manoeuvring challenge and a speed challenge. Teams should practice pushing, parking, and direction change skills i.e. both forward and backward driving skills)
  3. Presentation: finishing/decorating of the vehicle and a presentation outlining how the vehicle was designed and constructed (This is a requirement for this year’s event)

N.B. All vehicle drivers must provide and wear head protection (bicycle helmet, hockey helmet, etc.)

Please dress for the weather as this is an outdoor event!

Please note: It is expected that all team members will remain for the entire medal presentations (finish time approximately 6:30 p.m.)
