To provide technical and scientific support for approved projects, specifically those associated with the safety and development of new and improved products for clinical use.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
1.Key Duties
1.1To perform experimental work that advances the agreed project(s) within R&D:
1.1.1 maintain a high standard of work, in accordance with Good laboratory Practice (GLP) or BPL Standard Laboratory Practice (SLP).
1.1.2 contribute to the design of experiments by planning, writing and reviewing SOPs and/or study plans.
1.1.3 be trained and competent in the use of a range of specialized laboratory equipment.
1.1.4 develop and validate purification and analytical methods.
1.1.5 follow written procedures such as standard operating procedures (SOPs) and study plans.
1.1.6 maintain accurate and up to date records of all experimental work.
1.1.7 record and investigate any deviations from expected results or documented procedures.
1.2To review and analyse experimental results:
1.2.1utilise the appropriate computer software packages to allow detailed analyses of results
1.2.2identify any variations and trends.
1.2.3make recommendations on future project strategies based on analyses.
1.2.4survey literature and evaluate data from other organizations.
1.3To communicate information clearly and logically:
1.3.1assist in the preparation of progress, interim and final reports.
1.3.2provide updates on project progress to intra and inter-departmental colleagues.
1.3.3use presentation skills appropriate to the target audience.
1.3.4train and assess other staff.
1.4To assist in the maintenance of laboratory resources:
1.4.1clean, calibrate and maintain equipment.
1.4.2prepare and maintain reagents.
1.4.3maintain contact with external suppliers and technical specialists.
1.5To maintain compliance:
1.5.1be conversant with, and apply, internal and national policies.
1.5.2observe laboratory health and safety instructions regarding the use of personal protective clothing and equipment.
1.5.3perform and review general risk assessments and observe COSHH regulations.
1.5.4observe all GMP, SLP/GLP requirements and contribute to audits.
1.5.5secure the confidentiality of BPL information.
2Principal Resources Controlled:
2.1Responsible for the use of consumables and reagents within the laboratory, and to report any difficulties to the line manager.
2.2Responsible for stock control in area of responsibility and the ordering of laboratory supplies and consumables.
2.3Responsible for ensuring that allocated equipment/instrumentation is maintained, servicedand calibrated and that associated records are in compliance at all times.
3.Planning and Organisation:
3.1Plan own working day to ensure completion of project within agreed deadlines.
3.2Maintain a personal training and development folder and ensure that training to others is appropriately documented.
3.3Maintain a record of time spent on specific activities.
4.Contact with Others:
4.1Other members of the department during execution of their duties, and may be asked to participate in team activities that extend beyond the line management structure.
4.2Suppliers of consumables and instrument service contractors as required.
4.3Staff across site as more complex tasks are undertaken.
5.Major Challenge of the Job:
5.1Performing competently a variety of biochemical and biological techniques. Working with ahigh degree of accuracy.
5.2Maintaining a high standard of work, in accordance with Good laboratory Practice (GLP) or BPL Standard Laboratory Practice (SLP).
5.3Remaining up to date with specialist knowledge and skills.
5.4Maintaining awareness of current legislation and regulations.
5.5Concentrating on complex data for prolonged periods of time.
5.6Handling potentially infectious biological material in accordance with local safety procedures.
6.Knowledge, Skill and Experience Required:
6.1A BSc degree, preferably in a biology- or biochemistry- based subject, or relevant experience.
6.2Completion of R&D induction training.
6.3On-going training on a variety of equipment and techniques and a variety of short courses as necessary.
6.4Knowledge of scientific investigation and reporting.
7.Decision Making Authority:
7.1Planning own work on a day-to-day basis in line with project demands.
7.2Determining the validity of experimental results and decide if further investigation ormanagerial advice is needed before starting the next stage of the work programme.
7.3Solving minor technical problems.
7.4Assessing the competency of individuals that they have trained.
8.Other Information:
8.1 Scientists will receive appropriate training in all aspects of their work. Scientists are not expected orpermitted to work without prior agreement that adequate training has been provided.
8.2Within their capabilities and potential, Scientists may be required to work on different projects, which may not be led by their own line-manager.
