Guinevere Comparison and Contrast Essay

As cultures evolve, storytellers recycle stories, legends, and heroes from bygone eras based on their own needs, desires, and values. How does the role of a famous and predominant lady, Guinevere of Arthur’s legends, change to reflect changes in our society?

In order to effectively answer this question, you will compose a 5 paragraph essay where you will discuss similarities and differences between Guinevere in differenttwo films, King Arthur and First Knight. You will also write a paragraph explaining why the differences occur due largely to our changing views in society. Below is the information you will need to focus on for each clip. Please note that you will also receive a detailed outline that will be filled out to assist you in the writing process.

  1. Similarities—Focus on how the two Guinevere characters are alike. DO NOT focus on small details (i.e. hair color, dresses, etc.). Focus on the major character traits that stay universal through each movie clip. You will need at least two similarities as examples for each scene that is shown.
  1. Differences—Focus on how the two characters are different. DO NOT focus on small details (i.e. hair color, dresses, etc.). Focus on the major character traits that differ through each movie clip. You will need at least two differences as examples for each scene that is shown.
  1. Disparity Analysis Paragraph—Understand why the films make the changes they make. Consider what has changed with our societal views of women and their roles in our culture.

Body Paragraph #1—Rescue scene

Body Paragraph #2—Arthur relationship

Body Paragraph #3—Modern Influence

Please note that we will be watching clips from both movies during class. If you are absent on the day of the clips, or need to see the clips again, each senior English teacher is providing an extra viewing of the clips after school on various dates. These dates will be provided once the schedule has been confirmed with all of the teachers. If you cannot come in to tutoring on one of the make-up days, you will be expected to rent or obtain the movie yourself.

Note: All students are expected to watch the clips and will be given appropriate opportunities to watch the clips in class. If the student does not use the opportunities provided, the student is fully responsible for viewing the films on his/herown time using his/herown resources.

Furthermore, if you wish to use scenes from the films that are not provided in class, you most obtain permission from your teacher in advance of using those examples. All clips that are used without the permission of the instructor will be considered off topic, and you will not receive credit for those examples.
