General Guidelines for Nursing Students

Fairview Medical Group clinics

Welcome to Fairview Medical Group clinics! We are committed to helping your clinical rotation here be a valuable learning experience for you as you develop in your professional role as a nurse. We also have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for you, our employees, and our patients. For this reason, listed below are our policies and guidelines that will be important to you during your clinical rotation.

All student placements for pre-licensure nurses are arranged by the school instructor withEmily Wilson, Academic Clinical Placement Coordinator through TCCP. All student placements for MA students are arranged by the school instructor and Amanda Brandt, Academic Affiliation Coordinator. Tanya Velishek coordinates Advanced Practice Professionals through TCCP.

  1. It is very important to complete the required learning and the EPIC e-learning modules prior to starting your first day of clinical experience. Click on the link for your required learning:
  1. EPIC is the Electronic Medical Record utilized at the clinics. Students need to obtain training on this before the clinical experience. If access to Epic is needed, please contact Emily, Amanda, or Tanya. Important: It is imperative that we receive the enclosed student experience request form in order to assign access codes at least 14 days prior to start of clinical rotation. It is the policy of the Fairview Security Department, that each instructor and student must have his or her own access code. If a student is also a Fairview employee, these student access codes will be in addition to the Fairview codes. If an instructor is a Fairview employee, she or he can continue to use the same user ID’s.
  1. Students should park in the designated staff parking areas. If no designated staff parking area, please allow for the closer open spaces to be usedfor patients and visitors.
  1. All students will need a photo ID badge while at Fairview Clinics. Please see the badge guide on TCCP to see locations on where to get a Fairview ID badge.
  1. We have outlined below some areas that require a more complex skill level or assessment and because you are a student you will not be allowed to do them at all or allowed to do them only under the direct supervision of your instructor or the staff nurse assigned as your preceptor. This means that the instructor or staff nurses must be with you while you perform the activity.

-Students may hang replacement IV bags and administer IVPB only if under the direct observation of an instructor or RN.

-Students may NOT administer IV push medication, tube feedings, give an IM injection and administer insulin unless the patient‘s condition is stable and they under the direct observation of the RN or Instructor and the instructor and or RN are present to evaluate the patient’s response.

In addition to the above psychomotor skills, Precepted students absolutely may not at any time (even if under the supervision of an RN):

- Start IVs. Rationale: Students have not been trained and validated on IV equipment, technique, and start kits.

- Initiate or hang TPN, Lipids and Medication Drips (eg. Heparin, Natracor, Dobutamine, Pitocin, etc)

- Perform Central Line Tubing Change

- Discontinue Central Lines

- Perform Line Blood Draws (from any line)

- Administer blood and assess response to blood infusion.

- Manage Passy-Muir (speaking)

- Program PCA pumps

- Perform glucose monitor testing (unless training is complete and they meet the competency required by the Laboratory Department)

- Manage epidural Infusion, Tubing or Pump settings

- Remove any Type of Wound Drain (Penrose, JP, Duval, etc)

- Take verbal or written orders

- Do EKG Interpretation

- Verify Informed Consent

- Administer chemotherapy via any route including oral
