Guidelines for Compare/Contrast Research Paper

Basic Directions:

1.  Compose a research paper showing several similarities and differences between the two topic items. You want to have a clear position on the two items—you do not just want to list similarities and differences.

2.  This paper must be at least 6-full paragraphs (5-8 sentences per paragraph)

3.  This paper must have at least 500 words

4.  This paper must use textual evidence and contain at least 3 sources

5.  This paper must contain a cover page and works cited page

6.  This paper must follow the rules of MLA.

Format:

1.  Your paper must be typed. Hand written papers will not be accepted.

2.  Single spaced papers will not be accepted. Double spaced only.

3.  Papers with incorrect margins will not be accepted.

Typing Instructions:

·  Style- Times New Roman font

·  Margins- The default setting should be fine.

Top- 1”

Bottom-1”

Left- 1”

Right- 1”

·  Spacing- Double

·  Title page- Include an original title.

Paper must include:

1.  An introduction

2.  4 body paragraphs that support the thesis using research. Each paragraph must be at least 5 full sentences long

3.  A conclusion summarizing the main point of the paper/restating the thesis

4.  Biggest Point- Does the body of the paper support the thesis?

5.  In your thesis, the major points should be listed in the same order as they are discussed in the paper.

6.  Absolutely zero plagiarism!!!!

Things to Remember

1.  Do not use contractions- write out the whole word.

2.  Do not use symbols for words--write it out.

3.  Papers must be typed.

4.  Handwritten papers will not be accepted.

5.  Double space.

6.  Have a title page.

7.  Have a works cited page.

8. Alphabetize the works cited page.

9. Include in-text citations with page numbers when available.

·  Example: (Smith 54). Author(s) name and page number(s) where you found the information.

10. Do not end with a citation. End the paper in your own words.

Important Dates:

1.  Must have at least three Internet articles to use as sources by Monday January 19th You will need this for classwork!

2.  January 23-31 -- Complete research outlines in class.

3.  February 7th -- Research Papers Due! This paper is worth 150 Points!
