Guidance notes for Community Outreach Officer, LGBT* Connect

Background

Opening Doors London (ODL) are recruiting a worker to support work with older lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* (LGBT*) people in and around the London borough of Camden.

LGBT* Connect is a partnership of older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans* (LGBT*) people and a number of Camden organisations, working together to reconnect older LGBT* people to local networks, both to improve their wellbeing and to strengthen local communities.

LGBT* Connect generally sets up new groups that are open to all members of the older LGBT* community to attend. Occasionally groups will be gender specific.

The work

Monitoring

A core part of this role will be to take ownership of the monitoring requirements of the project and make sure that all participants complete an application form, and are encouraged to complete an entry survey and a follow up survey for the national funding body.

Advertising the project to members of the older LGBT* Community in and around Camden

LGBT* Connect aims to prevent and reduce social isolation and loneliness. A big part of this role will be to make sure that potentially isolated individuals in Camden hear about LGBT* Connect and are able to access the service.

Running groups, events and activities

The work generally involves four stages:

  • Preparation of sessions
  • Running the sessions
  • Ensuring all administrative arrangements have been completed, payments have been made and monitoring forms have been submitted. A report must be completed for every session. All such reports must be submitted at the latest by 1 calendar month following the date of the session to which they apply.
  • Preparing the group after approximately six sessions to be handed over to a volunteer for the group to continue running in a self-sufficient manner without paid staff attending every session.

This role is part of a bigger project: Aging Better in Camden which is hosted by Age UK Camden and delivered by a number of voluntary sector organisations – including Opening Doors London.
