Guidance for schools applying for funding

for specific global learning projects, 2017-18

What is the purpose of the funding?

As part of the Global Learning Programme Wales (GLP-W), we would like to build on the achievements of GLP-W schools over the past few years by giving all schools in Wales the opportunity to apply for one of our £2,000 grants to carry out a specific project. We welcome applications both from schools previously involved with GLP-W and from those who have not yet had the opportunity.

What are the criteria for funding?

All projects must provide opportunities for the critical examination of global issues and the roles that individuals and communities can play in reducing global poverty, within a framework of social justice. Specifically, projects should have a demonstrable impact on two or more of the six Global Learning Programme Wales aims as outlined below:

Aim 1 / To help children and young people understand their role in a globally interdependent world and explore ways by which they can make it more just and sustainable
Aim 2 / To familiarise pupils with the concepts of interdependence, development, globalisation and sustainability
Aim 3 / To enable teachers to move pupils from a charity mentality to a social justice mentality
Aim 4 / To stimulate critical thinking about global issues, both at a whole school and pupil level
Aim 5 / To help schools promote greater awareness of global povertyand how it can be reduced
Aim 6 / To enable teachers to explore new and alternative ways of teaching about development and sustainability in the classroom

The projects should also relate to the knowledge, skills and values outlined in the GLP-W pupil outcomes. Projects are also for learning taking place in primarily in Wales – funding will not cover overseas trips or physical exchange programmes.

Impact and evaluation

In order to show impact at the end of your project, you should conduct before and after evaluation with the beneficiaries of your project, especially if you are working directly with pupils. The GLP-W progression frameworks are a useful starting point to inform this work.

Project co-ordinators will be asked to provide a short report on the project’s outcomes after completion. Interviews will also be conducted with a sample of project participants by the GLP-W team. These will be used for reporting and publicity purposes, for example case studies.

What sort of projects can be funded?

We encourage you to be creative and we will consider all ideas if they meet the funding criteria. We would strongly advise you to consider having expert training input from one of the GLP-W Approved Providers, if appropriate, for your project. Examples of possible projects include:

-  a global learning conference for pupils and teachers from a number of schools

-  a transition day with a global theme

-  a film project challenging stereotypes involving pupils in Wales and pupils in a developing country

-  schools learning together about a topical global issue and creating an exhibition for the local community

-  a whole-school or key stage curriculum project on a global theme or event

Timescale and sustainability

Projects must be completed by Friday 15 June 2018. The last date to submit project reports is Friday 29 June 2018. Ways to ensure the impact of the project is sustained beyond the life of the project itself should be built in to the project design from the beginning. For example, if you are running a pupil conference, you will need to ensure it is not just a ‘one-off’ experience for learners, and show how they will continue their global learning after the conference.

How to apply

Please fill in the ‘Application for funding for global learning projects’ form and email this to GLP-W Project Coordinator, Charlie Allen, by Thursday, January 18th, 2018. We will let you know the outcome of your application the following week..

If you are successful, you will be sent a funding agreement to sign and return. Please note that successful applications will be provided with 60% of the funding requested at the outset of the project with the final 40% being paid following approval of the report.

Please let us know if you have any queries.
