GUIDANCE DOCUMENT FOR THE 2017/18RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARDS

INTRODUCTION

The Research ExcellenceAwards celebrate excellence in the University’s research community. The awards are run on an annual basis with a maximum of two awards being made to individual researchers, or research teams, who have been nominated by their School Research & Enterprise Committee (SREC). Schools are strongly encouraged to recognise excellence of early career researchers in making their nominations.

VALUE OF THE AWARD

The Research Excellence Awards are personal awards. The first prize will be £2,000 and the second prize will be £500. These amounts will be subject to the standard salary deductions including tax and NI. For research groups, the award will be split equally amongst group members. Payments will be made into winners’ bank accounts in July 2018.

Awards will be presented at the University Day, which is being held on Thursday14th of June 2018

ELIGIBILITY

All research active University of Salford staff are eligible to be nominated.

NOMINATION PROCESS

EachSchool Research & Enterprise Committees (SREC) will identify the best candidate from the School. Nominations are made to by self-nomination through completing the nomination form attached. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, The Dean of Researchand the Director of the Doctoral School will select the winner and runner-up.

Nominations will be judged against how the researcher/research group has demonstrated excellence, including how the research excellence fits with the School/University research strategies.

Criteria will include:

  • Evidence ofworld leading publications, PGR Supervision, research impact or income generation. For Early Career Research, expectations of research excellence will take into account grade and experience.
  • Evidence including: supporting colleaguesin Research; establishing a successful research group; partnership development; interdisciplinary research; demonstrating impact and engagement beyond immediate academic role(s).

Monday 23 April 2018: Call for Applications opens

Thursday 10 May 2018: Application Deadline

(Midnight)

By Wednesday30 May 2018: All shortlisted applicants will have been invited to University Day

Thursday 14 June 2018: Winners presented at University Day

July 2018:Payments made into salaries.
