Coles Notes Version of Ideas to Enhance Student Involvement (and Subsequently New Grad Involvement) in the Leadership Division of the CPA

By Mabel Plourde-Doran

  1. Graduation award implemented in accredited physiotherapy/physical therapy universities across Canada (was discussed to possibly offer free year’s membership with the Leadership Division).
  2. Student Leadership Council

-Start with recruiting two representatives from each school to be on the Leadership Division’s very first Student Leadership Council.

-The council members have two major roles: Help plan/coordinate a Leadership Symposium (to be held during the students’ second year), and coordinate a school Leadership Project

  1. Leadership Symposium would be an interschool event (1-2 days)
  • guest speakers (leadership opportunities, their stories)
  • leadership building activities
  • new grad presentations
  • help identify professional identity
  • each school presents their Leadership Project
  1. Leadership Project
  • Each school is required to plan and implement a leadership project (could be anything to promote physiotherapy in their communities) prior to symposium. They will each present their project (methods, results, experiences) at the symposium.
  1. Leadership Campaign
  • Ongoing campaign where students are encouraged to be leaders within their placements (possibilities are endless)
  • Students enter the contest via video submissions on Facebook
  1. Facebook Initiative
  • Goal- get more students to follow the Leadership Division on Facebook (and contribute with posts, likes, etc.)
  • Leadership campaign would utilize the Leadership Division Facebook page.
  • Student council members would be encouraged to post updates, and to encourage their peers to also like the Leadership Division page.
