Using C.E.R to explain Newton’s 1st Law of Motion

In this activity you will solve two problems as a group. Every person in the group has to be able to solve the problem independently. You will have to make sure that you and everybody else understand every part of the solution to the problem. One person will be randomly selected to present the problem to the class. Your individual grade will be based on the performance of that person on the board.

Part I.Assigned Group Problem to Explain using Claims, Evidence, and ReasoningFormat: Explain to the class on Monday how your use Newton’s 1st Law of motion to solve the following question. In addition, you should use C.E.R. (Claims, Evidence, Reasoning) format to complete the answer for each part of the question.

1)An astronaut, floating freely near the shuttle, is switching fuel tanks in a satellite. The astronaut pulls out the empty fuel tank, then gets distracted and can’t remember which tank is the full one and which is the empty one. The two tanks look just the same.

  1. Can the astronaut simply weigh the tanks to find the full tank? Why or why not?

C / I claim…. / This is where you answer the question
E / My evidence…. / This is where you quote relevant information
R / My reasoning…. / This is where you show that you understand the science! To do this well, state the physics concept(s) (law, equation, etc.) and connect the claim and the evidence using the concept you stated.
  1. Can the astronaut simply shake one tank and then the other to find the full tank? Why or why not?

R / My reasoning…. / This is where you show that you understand the science! To do this well, state the physics concept(s) (law, equation, etc.) and connect the claim and the evidence using the concept you stated.

Part II.Finding Examples of 1st Law: Your group is now responsible to come up with an example of how Newton’s 1st Law applies and can help explain a situation. Use picture/sketches, descriptions to demonstrate how Newton’s 1st law is important and applies to this situation. (If you have access to the Internet and like to use videos, and add annotations to explain, what is fine as well)

Here is an example:

Explanation:

Claim: The pipeflying through the truck’s window demonstrates a Newton’s 1st Law of Motion.

Evidence: The picture caption explains that the steel pipe was on the flatbed behind the truck, and it shot through the front when the driver hit the brake suddenly.

Reasoning: This is an example of Newton’s 1st Law of Motion because the pipe was moving with the truck. The steel pipe has a lot of inertia because it has a lot of mass (made of steel). Since the pipe and the truck were both moving, object in motion will stay in motion. The inertial of the steel pipe caused it to continue its motion because there wasn’t enough friction to apply an unbalanced force when the truck suddenly braked. This is why the steel pipe went through to the front of the truck window.

But by the end of my trip, when the shopping cart was full of stuff, it became very difficult for me to move the cart (ii). I couldn’t fit anything else so I decided to go to pay at the register. I had to make a ninety-degree turn to get in line, but the cart was so full that I couldn’t complete the turn. (iii)
