TEXTBOOK EVALUATION

Aspects evaluated: Appearance, Teacher-friendly, Interesting

I.Appearance:

1.Cover:

  • Front side: the similar design to T.A 10,11. => boring, not stimulate Ss’ curiousness of the book content.
  • Back side: no relevant information.

  2. Introduction: clear &enough information.
  3. Book map:

- color background: similar levels of green between 2 nearby units

=> difficult to seek for information.

- unit topics , 4 skills & language focus

=> orient for Ss to have overview.

  • Unit design:

-Title: red color, big size, bolded. Unit’s beginning: left side.

-Main points: bold, different color, bigger size.

  2. Drawings: Ex: Unit 3 (p.30), Unit 12 (p.135)…

Attractive, beautiful..

  • Pictures: Ex: Unit 4 (p.44) , Unit 6 (p62)…

Realistic, familiar…

4. Color: Different kinds of colors ( not too colorful to distract Ss)

 Conclusion: Tieng Anh 12 (Basic) is not totally attractive & appealing at appearance.

II.Teacher-friendly

1. No index => inconvenient for teachers

2.Answer key: provided in Teacher’s book => convenient for teachers

3.Teacher’s preparation time

a. No explanations for Grammar => not help teacher save preparation time.

b. before-, while-, after- skill activities => help teachers prepare lesson plans more easily

c. Glossary: easy to prepare less plans & teach vocabulary.

4.Organization

a. Themes: You and me, Education, Community, Nature, Recreation, People and places.

b. Test yourself parts after 2- 3 units.

Unit 4: School education system /  / British education is not familiar with Vietnamese Ss.
Unit 5: Higher education /  / Ss are in grade 12-> eager to know about University life.
Unit 6: Future jobs /  / Ss have chance to share about future orientation.
Unit 7: Economic reforms /  / Ss may have no interest to learn about serious economic problems.
Unit 8:Life in the future /  / Ss’ imagination is encouraged.
Unit 9: Deserts /  / Unfamiliar to Ss: Sahara, strange animals…

Unit 11: Books /  / Ss can talk about many kinds of books & shares their reading hobbies.

Unit 14: International organizations /  / Ss can know more about popular world organizations
Unit 15: Women in society /  / Ss can express their point of view, concerning the right of women.
Unit 16:The association of Southeast Asian Nations /  / Ss have a chance to get knowledge about neighbor countries.

=> More interesting topics (9) than uninteresting ones(7).

  • Activity:

Generally, the book covers many kinds of activities ( Multiple choice, answering the question, T/F statement…) and work arrangement ( pair, group, individual…) . However, most of the tasks are not conducted in a really interesting way, no game is provided.

Example: * Speaking, Unit 4 task 1: Students are asked to work in pairs, read the table about education system then ask and answer the questions-> no information gap -> no motivation to do this task

* Listening, Before you read part in most of the units: students listen and repeat mechanically.

* Reading, Unit 7, While you read, task 1: Students are just asked to give the Vietnamese meaning which are equivalent to the words and phrases in English -> so boring.

* Writing, Unit 3, task 1: Students are told to reorder the word and change the form of verbs ( no addition and omission) Or in task 2, Students have to reorder the sentences to make a paragraph => too easy for Students( grade 12).

However, there are still some interesting activities:

Example: * Writing: Unit 8, students can describe the ideal world in which they want to live in the year 2020-> encourages students’ imagination.

* Speaking: Unit 6, Students are asked to discuss in pairs about the names of the counties and their capitals through pictures-> attractive to students.

  • Language focus:

* Pronunciation: in all units, students just listen and repeat mechanically and practice reading single sentences, no hints or funny clues to help students easily remember.

* Grammar: there is only exercise, most of which require students apply the grammar points they have learnt mechanically.

-> Not interesting

Overall, English basic 12 is not really interesting to students

- The information given in some units is related to students’ lives.

Ex:

Unit 3:
Ways of socializing / Ss can learn ways of giving and responding compliments, attracting someone’s attention…
Unit 6 : Future jobs / Ss can talk to each other about many kinds of jobs and share about the jobs they want to do in the future.

Conclusion: Tieng Anh 12 (Basic) is not really interesting to learners.
