ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION

Greenzones of Perkera Catchment Community Associationis a registered association withinEldama Ravine Division, Koibatek district, in Baringo County. The association summarily deals with conservation of biodiversity (environment), food security, research, Civic education, awareness creationon HIV & AIDS pandemic, Environmental conservationand peace building among communities within the district, and County at large.

Koibatek district is rich in biodiversity, both flora and fauna. With Lembus forest, thatsurrounds theregion, this forms a very important ecosystem, and notably, many rivers emanates in there, and hence it forms a catchment of various rivers, which pours its water in the Perkerra River, an important river to the lower part of the County, given that, the lower region of the county is semi- arid.

Conservation of biodiversity and rehabilitation of Lembus forest is therefore very important.Communities surrounding the forest need to be sensitized on sustainable management of the ecosystem and proper management plans developed, adopted and implemented accordingly.

Over the years and through our research, we have realized that there is a missing link and information flow between the youth and the old which is vital in conservation of biodiversity through incorporation of both indigenous knowledge and the modern technological innovations, a key concept conservation.

Greenzones of Perkera Catchment Community Association has taken the initiative, to mobilize the communities and address the vice accordingly.

The Association has planned for various activities like planting indigenous trees within the ecosystem, Institutional trainings on conservation of environment, Planting trees in schools/Institutions, On-farm tree planting, adopt a tree initiatives within major townships, Environmental awareness creation through songs/Poems/Plays/Sports and essay writing competitions, among others.
