Appointment System Change – GP telephone triage trial

We have identified a need to improve access to healthcare for patients who require urgent care from their GP.

In order to ensure that patients who need advice or treatment on a given day receive it, we have decided to introduce GP Telephone triage for a trial period. Any patient who contacts the practice and informs Reception that they need an appointment or advice that day will be added to our triage list. All patients on this list will be telephoned by one of the doctors during the course of the morning. This means that patients will have an early opportunity to discuss their needs with a doctor and make a joint decision on how to proceed. This may be an appointment at the surgery either that day or in the future (whichever is the most appropriate), arrangements for further treatment/referral, or it may be that telephone advice is all that is required, thus saving a trip to the surgery.

We started the trial on 21st May and believe we need to let it run for 2-3 months to determine how effective it is and whether it should continue, either as it is or with appropriate change. We would value feedback from patients and there is a survey which can be completed on our website. Alternatively please ask Reception for a paper copy to complete. If you have experienced the triage system, please try to make the time to complete the survey, and thereby help us to get the system working efficiently. Your views are important to us.
