Band Booster General Meeting

Thursday, March 7, 2013 7:00 PM

Alecia Eppley called the meeting to order in the band room at 7:00 PM. The following were in attendance: Alecia Eppley, Dan Eppley, Rhonda Lumley, Carol Jeffries, Sharon Shannon, Rebecca Hecking, Theresa Pochatko, Dennis Lumley, Kristin Martin, Mary Jo Bartnicki, and John Rizzo. Alecia allowed time for all to review a copy of February’s minutes. A motion was made by Rebecca to approve and a second was made by Rhonda.

Band Director’s Report

Aaron McAfee was not present, as he was attending the Regional Band Festival being held at Mercer HS. Alecia stated that he had had a very busy week with a PMEA adjudication festival hosted by GHS on March 5 and a joint band/choral concert on March 6. He has been working a lot with the Steel kids after school and some evenings for possible upcoming performances

Treasurer’s Report

The beginning balance was $29,023.94. After various receipts and payments (see checkbook register attached), the ending balance as of March 7 was $13,716.79. Upcoming travel bills for Cedar Point that still need to be paid total $8510.59.

Old Business

·  Band Director Search Update – Aaron McAfee will be the GHS Band Director for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year. Applications for the full-time position for 2013-2014 are being accepted until March 15.

·  Disney Update – Rebecca has collected payment in full from all persons going on the trip. White band shoes (instrumentalists) need to be taken home and returned cleaned by Monday, March 11. New white shoes can be ordered from MTX. When the uniforms are returned from the cleaners, they will be re-fit and necessary repairs will be made. Ms. Burke will hold a mandatory meeting on March 18 at 3:15 in the band room for all students going on the trip. Band Boosters will be paying for a special Disney/GHS Band t-shirt for all band students on the trip, the price is $6.25 each. Charlie Demarest suggested there be an incentive award for good behavior – an “Esprit de Corps” award to be given to a winning chaperone group at the end of the trip. A certificate will be awarded, along with DQ gift card(s) that Kristin will supply.

·  Spring Spaghetti Dinner – April 7 at the Knights of Columbus, same times as last year: 11:30 – 2:30PM. Kristin requested that spaghetti and sauce donations be brought in before the trip – by Friday, March 22. Carol will send an email with the request. Carol will order butter and 8 bags of salad from the GHS Cafeteria. Several people took posters to post around town and Carol will advertise in the Record-Argus, on the electric sign downtown, in St Mike’s bulletin, and on the morning announcements at GHS.

·  Nominations for President and Secretary – Nominations should be submitted to Rhonda Lumley.

·  Scholarship – Applications are available on the music department website, in the band room and Carol has emailed a copy to senior parents. Completed applications are due to Carol’s residence by April 1.

·  Concerts – 50/50 sales from the Steel Concert on February 27 netted $151.00, $50 of which was donated back to the boosters by Dave and MaryJo Stapchuck. 50/50 sales from the band/choir concert on March 6 were $127.00.

·  Spring Concert - May 15 at 7 PM in the GHS Auditorium. Blankets for the seniors will be distributed that night – they need to be ordered from Stitch and Dazzle. There are 15 seniors, down from 16, since Grace Jaussen quit band. The cakes will also need to be ordered – will discuss at April’s meeting.

New Business

·  Banner – due to the poor condition of the current marching band banner following dry cleaning (gold paint was faded, missing), the band boosters offered to pay for a new one. The new banner was ordered a week ago (thanks to Charlie Demarest for his diligent efforts of coordinating everyone’s suggestions for design and colors!) and has already been shipped. It should arrive early next week in plenty of time for Disney.

·  Possible Steel Drum Performances – In lieu of attending the PMEA Conference in Erie in April, GHS has offered to pay for busing for 36 kids to go to Grove City College to present an afternoon master class. Boosters will pay for lunch - a suggestion was made to eat at Hicks dining hall which is in a building adjacent to Pew Fine Arts Center where the class will be held. An additional opportunity may be at Slippery Rock University for a joint evening concert with SRU’s steel band. Boosters would pay for the busing for this event – approximately $150.
