These awards are to be applied to direct college expenses at the institution, such as tuition, fees and books. The recipient is responsible for any tax liability incurred as a result of this award. The student is fully responsible for all tax reports. The Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program does not provide tax information to the student or the Internal Revenue Service.

Each scholarship has its own selection committee. The Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program processes the application materials for the committees that choose the recipients of the awards.

Yes. The Scholarship Committee will issue a check jointly to the recipient and the college, but it will be mailed to the recipient. You will be required to provide your full Social Security Number to the club/group.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Deadline: Applications must be received in the Greenbrier East counseling officeby 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2009. The applicant assumes all responsibility for duplicating copies of materials required—ONE COPY FOR EACH SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE. The following information should be included in order to be considered a complete application packet:

  • Student Cover Page
  • Application Form
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Copies of test scores (ACT/SAT)
  • Extra-curricular Activity Sheet—including volunteer service
  • Essay
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A list of special Awards/Honors
  • Financial Statement
  • Additional Requirements—check the description for each scholarship to see if additional information is required.

Cover Page: Must include your name, school, ID number and a senior picture.

Application Form: Use form attached in application unless specified. (See list on next page.)

Unofficial Transcript: See your school counselor for a copy of your transcript. There may be a fee for this request and you may need to do this in writing.

Copies of Test Scores: See your school counselor for a copy of your scores if you do not have copies.

Extra-curricular Activity Sheet: A complete chronological list of all school and community activities, clubs, leadership positions, work and volunteer experience in grades 9 –12.

Essay: Take time to prepare a developed, well-written, grammatically correct essay. This is your opportunity for the Scholarship Committee to know you individually. While GPA, ACT/SAT scores, financial need, etc. are important selection criteria, a good essay often sets one student apart from others. The essay is to be limited to one page length. You may want to write about an interest you have, a challenge you’ve met (or not) or something you are passionate about. There is no “correct” way to respond to this essay. In writing about something that matters to you, you will convey a sense of self. The essay must be computer prepared or hand printed. Check each scholarship criteria to see if you are required to write an essay on a particular topic.

Letters of Recommendation: Two letters should be from school personnel and one letter should be from a community leader or your employer.

A list of special awards/honors: Maximum one page list of any special awards or honors you have received.

Financial Statement: Use form attached in application
