Executive Director Job Description

Organization:

The Greater Des Moines Music Coalition, Inc. (“DMMC”) is an 11 year old 501(c)(3) Iowa nonprofit corporation based in Des Moines, Iowa dedicated to serving the Greater Des Moines music community. The DMMC’s mission is to support and cultivate Iowa’s music economy. Our vision isto establish and maintain Des Moines as a nationally recognized Music City. The DMMC is best known for producing the 80/35 Music Festival in downtown Des Moines for the last 9 summers. The DMMC also produces two smaller festivals, Little Big Fest and Gross Domestic Product, hosts a music conference, Music University, and is engaged in various educational projects and outreach to the Des Moines music community.

Position:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) willmanage the DMMC’s current programming, staff, independent contractors and volunteers, current grant and funding sources. The ED will also work to develop, design and implement a long term strategic plan and annual action plans andnew grant and funding sources for current and emerging programming of the DMMC. Financial responsibilities include preparing and trackingbudgets for the organization and the various programsof the DMMC in cooperation with the finance committee and the program manager. The ED will oversee, organize, implement, build and create the programming of the DMMC. And, finally, the ED will champion the DMMC and Des Moines as a Music City through participation with various government and community agencies, the media and the community in general,advocating for the DMMC, the music and the artists we support.

This position is a full time, salaried, exempt position.

Responsibilities:

-Develop and maintain positive relationships with musicians, business leaders, arts patrons, local government and school officials and others outside of the organization who are integral to the DMMC’s success, ensuring that the mission and vision of the DMMC is represented and positively received;

-Develop and maintaindiverse fundraising strategies, search for fundraising opportunities, seek corporate sponsorships, seek and cultivate individual arts patrons, write grant proposals and leverage partnerships with other organizations or governmental entities to reduce costs of programming;

-Design and implement a long term strategic plan and annual action plans, including identifying and driving timelines and resources to achieve strategic goals;

-Provide active, engaged and effective leadership to staff, independent contractors, interns, volunteers, instructors, artists and other community cultural organizations;

-Develop staff, independent contractors and volunteers as needed for the success of the organization and its programming;

-Meet monthly with the Board of Directors and prepare agendas and meeting documents for those meetings;

-Implement the operations and administration of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee by advising and informing members and coordinating meetings.

-Work with the Board of Directors and staff to develop and maintain an annual budget;

-Oversee the management of all funds consistent with the organization’s accounting system – ensuring financial statements are prepared as needed;

-Manage core programs and operations of the DMMC, including oversight of Little Big Fest and Gross Domestic Product, education programming and all other programming of the DMMC;

-Identify and implement new programming, as approved by the Board of Directors, that serves the music community;

-Develop a marketing plan that effectively tells the story of the DMMC and the impact it has had on the community;

-Represent the DMMC in media relations through interviews, press releases and related media engagements; and

-Perform additional responsibilities and duties as directed by the Board of Directors or Board of Directors Executive Committee from time to time.

Desired Qualifications:

-A minimum of five (5) years of work experience relevant to the position, includingemployment by an arts organization, non-profit corporation, or other for-profit entity, experience such as management, personnel supervision, program management, marketing, accounting, fund development, etc.;

-Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year college or university;

-Excellent written and verbal communications skills;

-Ability to work collaboratively with all sectors of the community, the Board of Directors, staff, independent contractors and volunteers;

-Experience in advocacy;

-Experience in soliciting and securing funding, including fundraising and grant-writing;

-Experience in organizing and presenting information to diverse groups;

-Strong financial management ability, including budget development, fiscal management, fund accounting and financial statement preparation;

-Experience and expertise in marketing and public relations, including website maintenance and social media;

-Experience in event planning and execution;

-Ability to be entrepreneurial and adaptable; action-oriented and self-directed; energetic and creative with a positive attitude and strong passion for arts and culture;

-Ability to travel locally (regularly) and throughout the state and region (occasionally) to attend trainings and meetings; and

-Ability to adjust to continuously changing situations that may require immediate decision and action.
