Job Description – Great Northern Arts Society Executive Director

The Great Northern Arts Society is a non-for-profit organization governed by 8-person board of directors. The society was established in 1988. Our mandate is to foster the training and education of Northern artists, to promote Northern art and artists world-wide, and to involve the community and visitors in an annual celebration of Northern art & culture. Now in our 20th Year Anniversary of the Great Northern Arts Festival, we provide one of the most fun, entertaining, & cultural northern attraction every summer in the NWT. Visited by many around the world, the Great Northern Arts Festival is a unique composition of visual, musical, fashion, media, and abstract art forms embedded with northern traditions and culture, where northern artists share their skill and knowledge with all in attendance and each other.

The Great Northern Arts Society is looking for an energetic individual for the role of their Executive Director. Reporting to a Board of Directors, the Festival Executive Director is responsible for all operational and administrative functions of the Great Northern Arts Society. This includes but is not limited to, the overall artistic management and programming initiatives of the Great Northern Arts Festival, training and managing staff during the Festival, financial administration (including seeking sponsorship and writing funding proposals), northern art and artist activities promotion and marketing strategies, establishing community & corporate partnerships on behalf of the Society, and overseeing the day to day operations of the Festival and other community initiatives directed by the Board.

The Executive Director will actively represent the Society within the community and collaboratively work with other agencies, departments, funding organizations and groups to further the objectives of the Society.

Within the guidelines and directions outlined by the Society, the Executive Director will need to work with considerable independence and personal initiative. They will need to provide leadership in creating and maintaining a supportive and developmental work environment.


Qualifications

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge in areas of administration, financial and resource management and planning, communications and marketing, as well as in in-depth understanding of a non-for-profit society. Knowledge of Traditional Northern Arts & Culture is required.

·  Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how to develop and implement fundraising strategies and effective planning of resource requirements, including seeking and securing funding contributions.

·  Possess strong interpersonal, relationship building and communication (written, oral & presentation) skills and is able to interact with local community persons, and people across the NWT, Yukon, & Nunavut with professionalism.

·  Outstanding time management and organizational skills required

·  Ability to work independently, and to direct staff and volunteers when needed.

·  Ability to work with Board of Directors, as part of the larger team (Society)

·  Experience working with people and groups developing program initiatives, and promotion for northern artists and art.

·  Excellent Computer skills required, including report-writing for yearly report to Board of Directors and Corporate Sponsors.

·  Financial Management skills would be an asset

Salary

Full-time position Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Salary between $50,000 - $65,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
