A – 10 points / B – 8 points / C – 7 points / D - 6 points
Components of an Empire / All seven of the required empire components are present and well represented. It is clear the student fully understands the making of an empire. / Six of the seven required empire components are present and well represented. It is clear the student understands the making of an empire. / Five of the seven required empire components are present and represented. The student appears to understand some elements of empire building. / Four or fewer of the seven required empire components are present and represented. The student appears to lack understanding of empire building.
Story / The story told in the graphic novel relates to the significanceof empires and their impact on civilizations past, present, and future. The story contains a clear progression that is easy to follow but also provokes curiosity and interest. / Attempts everything in the “A” column, but may not have been executed as well. The story may not seem todemonstrate significance, may lack interesting details and not captivate the reader as well as the “A” project does. / The story may not seem significant or meaningful. The student has not adequately communicated why this empire is significant to the overall historical theme. The story lacks captivating details and does not provoke the reader’s interest. / The story fails to relate the significance of empires, does not communicate any historical themes, and does not keep the reader’s interest.
Use of Images / Carefully chosen images help the reader understand the action / emotions in the story. / Most of the images help the reader understand the story. One or two are unrelated and confusing. / Story/comic includes images that do not relate to the story and confuses the reader. / Story/comic does not use images and relies to heavily on text.
