Ms. Maya Muller, Committee Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:05 PM.

After introductions, the agenda was reviewed and there were no changes.

Review of the Minutes of the Previous Meeting:

A motion was made to approve the minutes as written. The motion was seconded and unanimously approved.

Advisory Committee Business:

Dedra Daehn explained the importance of having a balanced membership – 50/50 split between employer and employee reps on the committee as she said the state board looks very closely at the membership balance.

Dedra also showed the committee members the new advisory website and explained how to access the web as well as the purpose for having the advisory web available.

Work Plan:

Dedra explained that the state board also requires each of the advisory committees to have a work plan outlining future activities. Dedra recognized that this committee had recently submitted their 2010-11 work plan and she thought that it was a good work plan.

Curriculum: Changes & Revisions:

Professor Plinz explained the new pathways for a career in graphic and web design at Clark College that she developed with the Art Department. Professor Plinz explained that the curriculum changes are major revisions and replacements of our existing programs. She used the pathway diagram to explain how students can enter a program then decide which pathway to take to further their education.

She said that the Prepress Certificate will no longer be offered but that prepress concepts will be integrated and taught in new courses. Two advisory members asked where press and bindery concepts would be addressed and expressed concern if these will be completely removed from the curriculum. Professor Plinz said that she is developing two new “Graphic Design Technology” courses, CGT 100 and CGT 200, which will teach graphic designers about prepress, printing and bindery. These courses will also include field trips to local printing shops so graphic design students can gain a perspective of the production workflow and print technologies used.

Professor Plinz explained how the Graphic Design Certificate replaces our Prepress Certificate and contains revised coursework. The Web Design Certificate replaces our Web and Multimedia Certificate and contains revised coursework. She then explained the new Graphic Design AFA Degree and Graphic and Web Design AAT Degree. A student can take the Graphic Design Certificate then go on to the new Graphic Design AFA Degree or Web & Graphic Design AAT Degree. A student can take the Web Design Certificate then go on to the Graphic and Web Design AAT Degree or the Web Design & Development AAT Degree. Professor Plinz then explained the details of the Graphic and Web Design programs, and how these changes affect the other AAT degree in Web Design and Development.

Professor Plinz explained the new CGT course titles and course descriptions. The Advisory members were enthusiastic about the updated courses, especially the Social Media and Emerging Technologies courses. They agreed with our decision to replace our 3D Animation course with an advanced content development course (CGT 204). Professor Plinz said that CGT 104 and 204, Web Multimedia Content I and II, were named more “generically” instead of naming them Flash 1 and Flash 2 because we do not know about the future viability of Flash and wanted flexibility to teach whatever content development tools are current trends. Bob will teach CGT 105 User Experience Design and CGT 106 Social Media Exploration (which replaces GRCP 101 Intro to Electronic Publishing and New Media).

A motion was made to approve the courses as outlined by Professor Plinz, as well as the outcomes and the new curriculum as follows:

Graphic Design Certificate

Web Design Certificate

Graphic Design Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) Degree

Web & Graphic Design Associate in Applied Technology (AAT) Degree

Web Design & Development Associate in Applied Technology (AAT) Degree

Department name change from GRCP to CGT (Computer Graphics Technology)

CGT “mini” Certificates of Completion

The motion was seconded and unanimously approved.

Facilities & Equipment:

Professor Hughes said they needed to replace FinalCutPro, but due to budget constraints, the GRCP Dept. purchased Adobe Premiere CS5 as replacement. The committee agreed that Adobe Premiere is an appropriate alternative software, and that a benefit is that this video software integrates well with other Adobe products.

Professor Plinz asked for feedback about Pantone’s current desktop color management solution called ColorMunki Design. The committee agreed that this is a valid choice for next year’s purchase consideration.

Professor Plinz provided pre-meeting information about the Facility proposal & layout for ART/GRCP programs in old Electronics AA4 spaces. The committee was in support of this proposal and will be of assistance to make this happen, as the need arises.

Instructional/Learning Experiences:

Professor Plinz provided an update about the Portland Litho Club Scholarship. After Amalia’s summer internship at Battleground Printing, she was hired as a part-time worker. Shannon Baugher is doing a Fall internship at Mollet Printing. Professor Plinz also asked the committee to let her know of any businesses who would be interested in hosting an intern, and also any contact who are interested in teaching GRCP 121, 213, 230, 231, and 233.

Next Meeting:

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM.
