Prior to his marriage, Jehan Peron, merchant, signed a loan for 20 livres with Robert Cornilleau, merchant. Jehan signed the note and promised to remain in the village of l'Houmeau, northwest of La Rochelle.

Jehan died before 17 Jan. 1580 when Marie married Antoine Richard with whom she has at least five children. She died before 30 Aug. 1623 when the inventory of her estate shows a large tiled house known as "Le Bon Temps", located on the Grande Rue du Perot in the parish of Saint-Jean-du-Perot in La Rochelle; two adjoining houses on the Rue de la Balangerie in the same parish; five quartiers of land in the parish of Saint-Maurice, Seigneurie of Laleu, including a vineyard in the Royal Fief and four quartiers in the grand fief of Saint-Michel.

La Rochelle Harbor

Francois was a shipowner and a merchant in La Rochelle. He and Jeanne were evidently not married as she married Nicolas Bernard in 1639.

On 8 Apr. 1639 in the presence of notary Jean Combault, Jeanne Suire, wife of Nicolas Bernard, acknowledged having received from Luc Perron, merchant, the sum of 36 livres to be deducted from the sum of the remaining 50 livres that she was to receive as part of the agreement with Francois Perron which was mentioned in the contract signed between them on 5 Nov. 1638. Francois signed over the rights to care of the child to his mother, however, as Francois was a minor (Francois was 23 and to be legal age at the time required that you be 25), his brother Luc was involved. Sixty livres is settled upon and the child was to be brought up in the Reformed Church and his father would take over as guardian when Daniel turned eight. (1)

"Leave and Permission given by the Board of New France in Quebec to Francois Peron, merchant from La Rochelle, to go by ship to the St. Lawrence River.

2 Oct. 1655

The Council established by his majesty for the affairs of New France at Quebec has promised Francois Peron, merchant of La Rochelle to dispatch or bring a ship in the St. Lawrence to anchor off Quebec to import food and other merchandise which they deem expedient for the country to suffer a visit and search for furs and equipment in all [Lestandue dud]- St. Lawrence River Exchange or [achapt] on pain of confiscation and other penalties provided from 1628 for the establishment of the colony of New France to regulate..." [it goes on to discuss the rules that apply to his taking a ship to Quebec and bringing back furs, etc.] (2) There is also a list of passengers who agreed to go to New France on Le Thaureau in his service.(3) A similar list of passengers is given for 10 Apr. 1657, 14 May 1658, 27 June 1659, and 1 Feb. 1662 as well. (4)

On 27 June 1659 we find Francois engaged to go to Canada with Michel Desorcis, another mechant of La Rochelle who are involved in shipping supplies to Quebec.

Daniel's Baptism- recorded in the Reformed Church of Dompierre et Bourgneuf, Aunis

Daniel is a witness to a marriage contract in La Rochelle in 1656 between Michel Desorcis and Francoise De La Barre. He is in New France in 1657 to learn to be a clerk in his father's business and returns to France in the fall of 1659. The business is poorly managed and his clerk in Quebec, Michel Desorcis, left much unfinished business. Francois' attorney, Jacques Masse dies in 1661 and Francois needs to replace him. Daniel sailed to New France in 1662 as his father's agent, however, the notary does not mention that Daniel is Francois' son, only that he is his servant. Daniel's job is to report all the trading activity in Canada and to settle all the accounts concerning Desorcis and Peron, to take charge of all the cargo in the frigate L'Aigle Blanc and to sell what he considers not needed and to take on cargo and passengers for the return trip to France. So, Daniel sailed on the L'Aigle Blanc at the end of April 1662 and arrived in Quebec on 5 June never to return.(2)

Daniel signed the act of abjuration, rejecting the heresy of Calvin in Quebec 6 Dec. 1663 as non-Catholics were not allowed in the province. If he wished to remain of the Huguenot faith he would have to return to France.

Because he rejected Calvinism, his father disowned him. On 1 Apr. 1664 Francois made Antoine Grignon his agent because he had sent his son to Quebec to do his business but instead of subjecting himself to do good and faithfull work as his conscience obliged, the said Suire forgot all the benefits that had been done by the said Peron, his debauchery was told to him by several people who returned to this country from Quebec by the last ships which were sent. (4) Needless to say, Francois was not happy with his son renouncing the Protestant faith.

The family name was originally spelled with one "R", the second one being added by the Catholic society of New France. After his father's death Daniel routinely uses the name "Perron" and not "Suire".(1)

In the fall of 1663 a group of "Filles du Roi" arrive, Louise Gargotin being one of them. She is from Thairé d'Aunis which is only a short distance from Daniel's home in La Rochelle. In the marriage contract he is noted as the natural son of Francois Peron and Jeanne Suire and Louise the daughter of Jacques Gargotin and Francoise Bernard. She comes with a dowry of 800 livres when the custom at the time was only for 300 livres. The contract was signed 23 Feb. 1664 and written by Notaire Pierre Duquet at the house of the bailiff of Quebec Pierre Biron. For the groom stood Jean Levasseur dit Lavigne, Bailiff, Pierre Chamars, Jacques Meusnier, Jacques David and Pierre Mureau. For the Bride, Jacques De La Roe, Pierre Biron, Bailiff, and Jeanne Poireau, his wife. Jean Montfort and Pierre Levasseur, brother of Jean, were also in attendance. (5)

Marriage Contract between Daniel and Louise

Three days later the couple were married in the church at Chateau-Richer. It is interesting to note that Daniel signed the marriage contract, however, he did not sign the record in the state Catholic register. (6)

Daniel and Louise settled on land that René Cosset sold to Michel Desorcis on 29 Oct. 1659 and that Daniel purchased in April 1664. This land was three arpents along the St. Lawrence River and a league and a half deep (about 4.6 miles). Like most of the settlers they were probably present when the first mass was celebrated at L'Ange Gardien on 18 Oct. 1664 at the home of Jean Trudelle. After the death of his father in 1665 Daniel gradually leaves his role as clerk and becomes a farmer or "habitant". By the 1667 census he has five acres under cultivation, but no animals.(7) In 1994 the Perron Family Association of America unveiled a monument on the ancestral homestead in front of 6279 Avenue Royale, L'Ange-Gardien, next to the historic chapel.(8)

Daniel seemed to have numerous disagreements with his neighbors and was always in court. The estate of Daniel Francois Perron dit Suire was drawn up by notary Paul Vachon on 11 Feb. 1679. Daniel was not wealthy at his death. His clothes were old and used to clothe the children, the bedspreads, beds and other things were so worn out that it was deemed not necessary to even list their value in the inventory. It described the buildings as "méchante maison, méchante etable et méchant hangar"... méchant translates as "nasty". Louise was given guardianship of the children by the Bailiff of Beaupre on 23 Jan. 1679 with Jacques Marette dit Lepine as deputy guardian. Daniel had in a strong box two documents, a receipt due to Perron when he was the agent for the affairs of his late father Monsieur Peron, bourgeois merchant of La Rochelle. This document is undated and was signed only by Daniel. The other is also a note without date or signature concerning the affairs that the deceased Perron had in the affairs of his deceased father Peron of the sum of 260 livres. The outstanding debts amount to 5 livres and the accounts payable are 214 livres, 12 sols. Louise dies at her son Antoine's home after an illness of a month and a half, between 7 Feb. and 20 May 1704. (9)

On 11 Feb. 1707 Antoine and Jeanne of l'Ange Gardien sold to Mathurin Huot, six perches of land which had belonged to the late Francois Perron and Louise Gargoutin, three perches obtained by exchange with Louis Tramblay and Marie Perron and three perches acquired by the seller.(3)

Antoine was admitted on several occasions to l'Hotel Dieu de Quebec:

Poor Jeanne was also in the hospital in Oct. 1710 and and again in June 1711 and died on the 23rd, less than a month after her husband. (5)
