The Department of Teacher Education offers graduate degrees in the following areas:

Master of Education

Initial Licensure Programs

  • Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA) with Licensure (Grades 7–12)
  • Intervention Specialist (Special Education) with Licensure (Mild to Moderate, Moderate to Intensive, Early Childhood Intervention Specialist)
  • Middle Childhood with Licensure (Grades 4–9)

Advanced Programs(These are only offered as online programs)

  • Curriculum and Instruction*
  • Reading Education* (with Reading Endorsement added to existing licensure) *Note: Student seeking a Master’s degree in any of the above programs can also opt to complete a graduate reading endorsement. This endorsement (an additional 12 credit hours) is attached to your license and allows you to teach reading in Grades K–12.

The master’s programs provide the opportunity for prospective students to earn initial licensure, add licensure, or to earn a master’s degree without licensure. Sample program requirements can be accessed on-line at

MASTER’S DEGREE ADMISSION CRITERIA

Note: These criteria are for U.S. citizens, permanent residents and international students whose first language is English.

Application:

Applications for a Master’s program in the Department of Teacher Education must include:

  • Undergraduate transcripts (and graduate transcripts, if any).
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score of 290. (Master’s with Licensure; Middle Childhood, Adolescent to Young Adult, Multi-Age ONLY)
  • Three letters of recommendations.
  • Autobiography – The autobiography should include relevant personal and professional information about the applicant, including a statement concerning long-range career goals (no more than two pages).
  • Academic writing sample (examples may include published paper or paper submitted for a course).
  • Experience – as demonstrated by an undergraduate program of studies that provides adequate preparation for the Master’s degree program the applicants wishes to enter.

Criteria:

All applications will be reviewed holistically, however, prospective master’s students generally should have:

a)An undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.00 (4.00 point scale) and a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent.

b)Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score.

PhD ADMISSION CRITERIA

Note: These criteria are for U.S. citizens, permanent residents and international students whose first language is English.

Application

Applications for a PhD program in the Department of Teacher Education must include:

  • Undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score.
  • Three letters of recommendations.
  • Autobiography – The autobiography should include relevant personal and professional information about the applicant, including a statement concerning long-range career goals (no more than two pages).
  • Academic writing sample (examples may include published paper, paper submitted for a course, or master’s project thesis).
  • Experience – Based on the nature and extent appropriate to the individual doctoral program as defined by each program area.

Criteria:

All applications will be reviewed holistically, however, prospective PhD students generally should have:

a)Master’s grade point average of at least 3.40(4.00 point scale) and a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent.

b)Score of at least 300 (verbal and quantitative combined) on the Graduate Record Exam(GRE).

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADMISSION CRITERIA

Note: These criteria are for students whose first language is not English.

  1. Certified Transcripts - From all institutions of higher learning showing the award of aBachelor’s degree. Submit to: Graduate College, R-Tech Bldg, 1 Ohio University, Athens OH 45701.
  2. Score of at least 300 (verbal and quantitative) on the Graduate Record Exam

(GRE).

  1. Three letters of recommendation – Two of the recommendations should be from collegeprofessors and one from an employer or professional colleague. The recommendationsshould be submitted in English; or, if the recommendations are in the native language, theoriginal should be accompanied by a certified translation.
  2. Autobiography – This is not to exceed twotypewritten pages. The autobiography should besubmitted in English; or, if the autobiography is written in the native language, the originalshould be accompanied by a certified translation. This autobiography, as a minimum, shouldinclude the following information: educational experiences; professional work experiences;career goals; future expectations; major influencing factors in your life; professionalorganizations; why you are selecting Ohio University and the particular program you areapplying to. You may include other information that you feel is relevant.
  3. Academic writing sample (examples may include published paper, paper submitted for a course, or master’s project thesis).
  4. Proof of Financial Responsibility – The form is enclosed with your application materials.This form must be received by the Graduate College, R-Tech Bldg, before the I-20visa. The form is available at

Proof of English Proficiency – Non-native speakers of English must submit official results of one of two standardized tests: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), as part of the application packet. Official scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to Ohio University. English language proficiency scores older than two years are not accepted. Ohio University can no longer issue an I-20 to a student with the provision to test upon arrival.

The iBT/IELTs/TOEFL scores for Unconditional Admission as follows:

  • Unconditional Admission with Eligibility for Funding:
  • iBT – 80 Composite, all Section Scores of 17
  • IELTs – 6.5 Composite, all Bands 6.5
  • Paper TOEFL – 550 Total, Composition 5, all other Section Scores 52
  • Unconditional Admission without Funding Eligibility:
  • iBT – 70 Composite, Writing 17, and all other Section Scores of 15
  • IELTS – 6.0 Composite 6.0, all Bands 6.0
  • Paper TOEFL – 525 Total, Composition 4, all other Section Scores 50

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TEACHER LICENSURE

International students who wish to become licensed as public school teachers by the OhioDepartment of Education will be required to meet the same requirements as all other students. These requirements include admission to ProfessionalEducation, successful completion of a graduate program, coursework, professional internship,successful completion of the Ohio Assessment for Educators.

TESTING INFORMATION FOR ALL APPLICANTS

GRADUATE RECORD EXAM

The General GRE (verbal and quantitative) is offered by computer only. On the OHIO

UNIVERSITY ATHENS CAMPUS, the test may be taken at the Educational Testing Center,

TheComputer-Based Test (CBT) may be scheduled by calling 1-800-GRE-CALL. The GREinformation bulletin also includes phone numbers for specific test centers. The GRE Website is Scoresover five years old not meeting cut-offscores may not be accepted for admission.
