Graduate Salon Awards

Grimsby Institute 23rd June 2015

The Grimsby Institute Graduate Salon Awards were held on the evening of 23rd June 2015, to celebrate the hard work and dedication of all Hair and Beauty Students over the last year. Students were awarded trophies and certificates in recognition of their commitment, customer care and abilities.

NAVIGO sponsored a new and inspiring award - The Graduate Salon NAVIGO Volunteer Beauty Student of the Year 2015! Kelly Moore (Dementia Engagement Project Worker for NAVIGO) who coordinates volunteer placements explained what work the student volunteers have been doing:

“Since April this year we have been fortunate enough to recruit Beauty Students to come along to NAVIGO’s Older People’s inpatient ward and community groups to offer treatments to people with dementia and their Carers. Students have also given treatments to servicer users at Rharian Fields, which supports people with eating disorders.

The feedback from those who have had treatments has been really positive: “It’s been years since I felt so glamorous, “My hands feel wonderful, thank you that was such a treat.”

Carina Coe was awarded the NAVIGO Beauty Student of the Year Award 2015. Kelly said “Although all the volunteers have made a huge difference to our service users, Carina has shown dedication, kindness and care that go above and beyond. She spends time with people, reassures them and overall has been asset to the team. She goes out of her way to come and support community events, she is always helpful and listens to the people she is treating.”

Kelly would like to pass her thanks on to all her volunteers for their time, effort and hard work.

DEMENTIA DIAGNOSIS RATES IN NE LINCOLNSHIRE

End of year figures released by NHS England in April 2015 show that the dementia diagnosis rate in North East Lincolnshire increased to 66.6% - significantly higher than the national average of 61.6%.

This news will be considered by many as a positive outcome for patients and families suffering with dementia; where doors can be opened to post diagnostic support, and in some cases, medication, to stabilise their condition, enabling the patient to remain in their home for longer delaying admittance to residential care.

It is estimated that there are approximately 2,100 people living with dementia in North East Lincolnshire and around 700 who have not received a diagnosis, highlighting there is still work to be done to bridge this gap.

The increase in diagnosis is a result of the commitment of local GPs and dementia services working together on a number of initiatives to meet a government directive, to ensure that two thirds of the patient population living with dementia receive a timely diagnosis. This drive will continue in 2015/16 with the involvement of various agencies in the area including the Alzheimer's Society.

Regionally health professionals are reviewing post diagnostic services across Yorkshire and Humber to identify any gaps in current services, ensuring that patients and carers receive the support they need following diagnosis.

Friendship at Home

Wednesday Friendship Club – For Over 60’s

St. Aidan’s Community Church,

Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes, DN35 7RQ

10am – 11.45am, £2 entry including refreshments

(First time free, carers free)

Our Friendship group was started in response to requests from older people who are isolated, anxious, feeling low or experiencing memory problems.

The main aim of our group is to give people a fun, light hearted social experience, where they can chat to new people and take part in stimulating activities

The group is led by our Project Worker, Marie. We have a variety of activities on each week, including discussion around news from past and present, quizzes, music, games and crafts. We are lucky to have some brilliant volunteers who support us every week .We have many themed sessions and activities, based around what is happening at the time of year – such as A Day at the Races, or an Irish themed morning to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

Members regularly give feedback, which helps to identify what they enjoy and how to shape to group to their needs. They tell us that laughter is the best medicine, and that the sessions really boost their mood. The only complaint so far has been Marie’s singing!!

If you, or someone you know, would like to attend or would like more information regarding the group, please contact Marie on 01472 602500.

Befriending Service

We also offer a one to one befriending service, for people over 60 who may feel lonely and isolated, live on their own and receive very little company. Members receive their own volunteer befriender, who is personally matched to them. Regular visits can be arranged mutually between member (or family members if appropriate) and volunteer. Experience shows that a regular visitor and conversation can help to boost confidence, mood and overall wellbeing.

We always take great care to match people, ensuring there are interests or circumstances in common that will encourage the friendship to strengthen and grow. Our volunteers are always police checked to ensure the safety of the member.

If you feel the service may be appropriate for you or someone you know, Please contact the Office on 01472 602500.
